What does this thing do?

I have a stainless tube that has a shepards hook at the top attached to my air intake snorkel. What purpose is the stainless tube that has been retro'd, besides completely disable all air to the regulator when it is hooked up? My diesel mechanic is not familar with it. WE bypassed it and got everything running perfect!

So what is is the point of this website? It seems somebody always finds a way to put down the new guys for asking questions that "are in the TMs", "easily found with a search" "all over the net". In my brief months here, I am already nervous about asking a question for fear of some General telling me those answers. I didn't know what a mwo was until a few weeks ago. Please don't do that to us nuggets!

Sorry if my post was too prickly. Believe it or not, I was actually trying to be helpful by letting you know that about any search (here or anywhere) would find what you are looking for. I find this site extremely helpful! I think you will too if you don't expect information spoon fed to you. The expectation here is that you will meet the SS site half way by helping yourself. I was in your same shoes five years ago and learned to appreciate that being steered (and harshly sometimes) to the TMs, etc. makes me much more capable and responsible owner of these large MVs.

Thanks for the response. My point is that if you dont even know where to start, the TMs are near useless. I appreciate all the help, and this place has great information , its just that every thread somebody says words to the affect of "just search" Well if that is the case we can lock the entire site and use it as reference materiel.

I have felt that many,many,many times in my life.I don't know what the answer is,nor do I pretend to. But maybe just a bit of ease for a guy that has not been in the military(no fault of his own,genetics)and has clearly declared a newbie..........I don't know.

You do not want to block off the breather tube. Mud dubbers like to block the tube as it is. Your fuel tank needs air. The cap is not vented. When mine gets blocked you can hear the air release when you pop open the fuel cap. I want o find a fine stainless steel mesh and wrap it around the tube opening to keep the pests from blocing it up.

I was in the service US ARMY 86-89 95B (MP) but I didn't do a bunch of stuff with big trucks. We still had some M151s and the HUMVEE just had hit the bricks.

I can work my way through the TMS as long as I have some idea one where to start. I worked on the air dryer and the and the "safety valve" with success and a few other things by the numbers but couldn't for the life of me figure out what this thing was in the first place. I was actually wondering the same thing, I figured it was some kind'of vent tube but wasn't sure. SO if it was there and the truck ran fine, I wasn't going to worry about it, besides I got the rest of my tires today, so today is a good day! AS is every day I wake up!!!!
