Finally picked up my new M1008

Hey Guys,

still new to this site, but I finally had a chance to drive down to ft myers to pick up my new M1008. I got it basically for free. Mechanically sound. Runs great, stops great, everything. Cosmetically isn't the prettiest thing you've seen, but body seems extremely straight with minimal rust (bottom of door) but the frame and undercarriage are MINT considering this truck was stationed in Minnesota with the National Guard.

Already has new glow plugs and new injection pump. What do you guys think need to be done first to this truck. (If it were yours)

doghead relay mod, gp's to 12v, do all fluids and filters are a good start. Cigarette lighter outlet (I put in 4) is a good idea so you can keep electronics charged.

I would leave it as its designed. They are good trucks and use it as you see fit. Run it for a while till you get to know its good or bad points than think about doing some mods. Make sure you do your PMs with the fluids and such and enjoy.

I would leave it as its designed.

The Doghead mod is preventive maintenance, which protects against a known defective part.

The resister bypass prevents a cascade failure of your glow plugs, WHEN, not IF, you have a GP failure.

Both are needed mods.

Oh yeah! Gotta get that dufus paint job off of there, and put the grill guard back where it belongs! It looks naked without it.

I'll take some interior pics here in a minute. The bench seat, which I highly doubt it original is actually in great condition. Already has 2 cigarette sockets installed. I was told it was some 12v some 24v. Really havent even had a chance to go through it in detail. It is sitting in one of my garages.

Can someone tell me what that beast of a connector is for? Im assuming something with trailering? It looks like it has the same connector on the rear bumper next to the pintle mount.

That's a diagnostic port. Unless you have the correct military-only instrument to read it, it's useless. You can pretty much ignore it.

I was told it was some 12v some 24v.

Your starter circuit is 24v, and part of your GP circuit. The rest is standard 12v.

I see that your master light switch is gone and there are extra gauges installed (good thing , better than idiot lights), go slow , just from the photos I think you need to take a long look at your electrics to see what has been changed and in what way , does the truck still have both alternators and batteries, take a good look under the hood and dash, try to hook up with another member that has a bone stock truck and compare, get the TM's,

Yes it still has both batteries and both alternators. Here are a few pics i took real quick under the hood

looks not bad under the hood , a few extra wires under the hood you should investigate , also lots of terminals that should be cleaned , use dielectric grease on all the connections , change ALL your fluids, and don't forget the truck uses silicone brake fluid, for antifreeze use Prestone heavy duty diesel , the new stuff is red, hope all this helps,

every little bit helps. I have worked on cars since I was 16 (Now 26) and many years spent wrenching for toyota, but this is obviously an entirely different monster.
When I have some time off, I will go over the electrical with a fine tooth comb.

As far as the plans are as of now, I would like to work on the cosmetics first, get the horrible palm tree camo off the truck. Im stuck betweeen redoing the camo from the ground up, or just olive drab green. After paint, I need to find a new front bumper/brush guard/shackles/winch and then worry about lifting it. This truck's sole purpose is off-road/mudder, but at the same time I don't want to take away from what the truck really is by hacking it up like I would any other mud truck.
