Choctow H-140 Heater

Wow, not a lot of discussion on these heaters. I just picked up two new ones at auction. Before I wonder over to the Alternative Fuels forum (I was overwhelmed by the information there), does anyone have DIRECT experience running waste oil in these heaters? I thought I'd ask for proof in the pudding before I reinvent the wheel. I have lots of waste oil and it would be a home run to use it in these heaters. I've already started to research a waste oil filtration system and getting my mind around the quickest/cheapest/bestest way to do it...

My two heaters still have the preservative oil in them so I'm hopeful the startup will be uneventful...

Like you said, filtration is key. These units do not have any sort of wick in them, do they? I know wicks would not like WMO. I use a blend of WMO and diesel in my H45 heater, but that is a little different animal. One thing to think about is in cold temps, WMO will not flow well cold, so start up might be tricky. I do not have any experience with your heaters though.

It has a filter inside and its obviously made to run in the cold. I have only run diesel thru mine I dont have access to any other fuel for it. But it is a really nice heater. The start procedure is spelled out on a data plate.

Congrats on your new heaters, I have one of its predecessors an H82, but have never tried burning anything except diesel in it, do post back and let us know how it goes.

The TM has the filter at 30 micron at 30 gpm (Parker) which sounds pretty big/fast to me, so I'm hopeful a filtering system would be simpler/easier than the guys trying to filter for engine fuel injectors.

The atomizing nozzles do have cintered bronze filters but I can't find technical data on what it is or what the spray orifice diameter is. I may order one of them and do an experiment.

I see the fuel pump and electric motor are inexpensive off the self items so this is looking better by the minute. Of course the combustion chamber and such is very custom work, but thanks to US, they are all stainless steel. The fuel pump is for oil burners so I'll have do so some research on pumping WO through it. Brand new ones at $45 so perhaps a cheap experiment is in my future.

One of these will go great in the shop expansion I'm doing.

Update: I'm interfacing with the manufacturer trying to find out technical information on the injectors and pump to see what kind of fuel it will handle and to what extent the WMO needs to be filtered. If I find out anything, I'll post back. I'm set up to make some test runs (pyro, exhaust gases, etc.) once I get some technical information. I'm going to run diesel and JP for the baseline, then I'd like to run WMO, DEXIII and a diesel/higher distillate mix for comparison. I'm hoping I don't have to change the injector for the test. Unfortunately, this project is on the slow boat.

I've been using my heater for over 4 yrs and it's cold near the water on Long Island but it lights up every time. Had trouble with the ignition transformer. Almost every thing in side is available at a burner supple co. Nozzles are off the shelf. warm my shop great.
