thermostat for oil cooler?

So I'm installing a flat plate style engine oil cooler on my 86 M1009, to bypass the leaky aluminum original lines and take some load off the cooling system. But now I'm wondering: is this something that should be run in series, like a transmission cooler? Also, I have an oil cooler thermostat (which did NOT come with the oil cooler, but could be made to fit with alot of screwing around). Should I bother using it, or can I run the oil lines from the engine directly to the new cooler? Any thoughts appreciated.

I finally got around to fitting up a external engine oil cooler for 1028. Here some observation. ( before install ) would idle for 10 mins @ 60 degrees before t-stat would open. oil pressure was 60psi cold and would be around 40 psi when t=stat open... btw thermostat is 190 degrees type
(After install ) idle for 20 mins no t-stat and still 60-50 psi ( think it the air in system spikeing the reading)
think I am going to add t-stat by pass to the cooler system 180degresses with 10 % bypass

Figured it out.. block of my motor was humvee take out apparently humvee dont have the oil bypass valve for oil cooler , go figure . And to make thing worse when I removed the adaptor for oil filter I inadvertently removed my bypass for oil filer, causing my oil pressure relief valve to close hence 85 psi and only two leaks......
