Are the M1009 differential covers special military parts?

My phone is not cooperating, otherwise I'd show a side by side of the original and replacement.

Going by that chart, I think the original is a GM 8.5" and what they gave me is a GM 7.5"

Must be wrong part. Not out of the standard. I've gotten wrong parts several times. Now Chinese castings? All out of spec. I've had to grind brake parts like wheel cylinders and rotors because the casting surface was way too large. Guess iron is cheap in China.

They probably gave you one for S-10 Blazer,they used 7.5 inch 10 bolts,some ZR-2s used 8.5s though.

What they sold me previously was a dorman 697-701

Went by the store again and the closest they could find was a dorman 697-700. Shows as working with K5 blazers, k30 suburbans, etc...

The GM part number doghead provided didn't come up in their system at all.

Has anyone here tried a dorman 697-700 rear differential cover on a 1009?

Weird. Oreilley's system shows it differently than the actual Dorman website. Oreilley's system says the 700 is good for the K5 and the 701 as good for the s10.

Second option down from the first link DH just posted is the dorm 697-700, and it shows as suitable for a K5 as well. Very weird.

I was going to order the dorman 697-700 through oreilley's but it's a "Special order" part, and would take 7 to 10 working days to get here.

Honestly, I'm thinking at this point I'll just put the damaged original back on and RTV the heck out of it.

Slightly related, I really don't see the point in buying locally anymore.

The 7.5 and 8.5 refers to ring gear diam.There are tons of 8.5 10 bolts in the yards,they put them in nearly everything,even in the Buick Turbo Grand Nationals.They are actually pretty strong rears.And the 8.5 rear covers are not vehicle specific, so you can pull a cover off any 8.5. Good way to maybe find a factory posi to throw in front also.

No No don't say that they are good rears. I said that once and was told they were junk and unsafe at any speed. They should all be junked because the C clips are a poor design. I have had one in every new Chevy truck I owned. I am sure my 2014 1/2 ton 4X4 has c clips but don't care. They always hold up for me. Even in my M1009's.

I could probably get one cheaper from a parts store... but I don't trust the parts stores to get this right, at this point. And I just want to get it back together as soon as possible.

This way I KNOW it's the right part.

3-5$ at a yard around here.The 8.5 has ears on bottom of housing,the 7.5 does not.Pretty easy to tell difference.
