New to CUCV

Hi guys.

I just picked up a M1009. This is my first one. Its my first diesel vehicle for that matter. Its in great shape, however the IP is leaking on it. Are there seal kits available for the IPs? Can someone point me in the right direction?

Also, What are the two things that are in the grille? The one on the passenger side looks like some type of plug, and the one on the drivers side.....just seems to be a solid plastic round thingy with a hood coming off the front of it. They are on all CUCVs that Ive seen...but I can't seem to find out what they are.

Passenger side is the slave port for jump starting, Driver side is part of the blackout light

Welcome aboard Sir. Seals are available for the injection pumps. Any local Stanadyne dealer can help. As far as the stuff in the grill, one is a blackout drive light and the other a slave port. Read about these in the Operator Manual, TM 9-2320-289-10. It's a free download in the TM section. Also in the CUCV section, be sure to read the CUCV wiki. (and CUCV Helpful Threads sticky)

Welcome from Texas. Just got my first M1009 this summer. If yours has floor mats be sure to check for rust and treat as needed.

Congrats on the new Cuck Vee!

It probably needs IP shaft seals which the kit is very cheap, the labor is not. I would recommend a decent reman'd IP unit. Now would be a good time to go through the fuel system and replace all the rubber lines and maybe upgrade the filter unit as well to protect the new purchase. You will find that initially these things depending on the condition you got it need a lot of maintenance. They will eventually become reliable rigs once you work the bugs out. If your truck is starting OK but just leaks fuel at the IP, consider yourself ahead of the curve.

Definately read the manuals here, become familiar with the truck, and get to know your starting/charging systems since they will give you the most amount of trouble up front.

Oh yeah, realistically you should get zero help until you post photos of your new purchase!

There actually isn't a bit of rust on the truck. Its amazing! But then again, I'm in Arizona so most vehicles here are rust free.

The blackout light thingy? What is its function? I know how to use the switch on the inside of the cab (I learned that one the hard way lol). Is the thing in the grille the "brain" for the blackout function or something? Kind of a strange place to put something like that lol.

Here are some pictures. A little bit of background about myself first though. I've spent 10+ years building and working on Subarus. I was once into the whole go fast thing but it got old so I started playing off road more and more. I never really liked the Impreza based cars either, I've always been a hardcore Legacy fan. That is why there are two BDs in my driveway. One is my wifes 1995 Legacy LSi and the other is my 95 Legacy LSi. The white one (mine) is on 29 inch BFG AT KOs, a lift I fabricated, 4.11 gears, 5mt, and the list goes on. It is actually very capable off road. It can go almost anywhere.

I got the CUCV as a backup vehicle, something to move big stuff with, and something to play offroad in the areas that are too difficult for the Subaru to handle. The story of how I got the CUCV is actually pretty neat. A good friend of mine has had it since 2010ish. The past 6 months or so he got tired of it and has been trying to sell it but hasn't had much luck. He drives it about once a month just to keep things "fresh". A few days ago he drove it to the store. When he came out, it wouldn't start. It just made a god awful grinding nose. He called me and said "I'm sick of this **** thing dude. I know you will enjoy it and you're much more capable of fixing it than I am so if you can come tow it you can have it.". An hour later I was there with another friends Cummins to tow it back to my house.

When I got it home I was going to pull off the starter. It sounded like the teeth on either the flexplate or starter got chewed up. To my surprise I found a starter that was hanging half way off....I tightened the bolts back up and it started right up!

The CUCV has brand new Goodyear 33 inch all terrain tires (including new matching spare), the entire brake system has been rebuilt within the last year, the back came full of extra and spare parts, the windows are tinted, I have the antennas, and it even came with a case of paint so I can redo the camo job on it! I had a pretty sweet deal fall in my lap!

I took it out after dark the other night to go target shooting and kind of play around in it a little bit. We had rain a few days ago so things were nice and muddy. It handled water crossings well and deep slick mud was nothing for this thing! It is a beast!

I've read online that some people struggle with their CUCVs going over 50mph. I don't know what their problem is because I'm able to cruise at 70mph on the highway without a problem. It just takes a little while to get up to 70mph.

I don't see how it can be a light because there is no lens on it. Unless it has been painted over by a previous owner?

There is a small lense right under the hood that sticks out. It is possible that someone painted over it or replaced it with something completely unrelated to the CUCV family of trucks. This may help! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackout_light

Also, the blazers have 3.08 gears and will run 70 all day long. The pickups have 4.56 gears and will only run 70 for a short period of time before the pistons start swapping holes.

Can tell you already love the 1009,now apply some of your Subaru tech. to it,imagine it with 410 gears,an OD trans and a turbo.
