I'm looking at buying my first military vehicle a 1986 m1008 with a plow on it and the drive home is 1 hour 30mins. If the cooling system is in good working order should I have any problems with over heating driving it home with the plow on the front? Weather has been in the 30s so I wasn't sure if this would be a issue or not?

It shouldn't be problem , but if your concerned just put the blade in the bed . Unless it's a V-plow 2 guys can load it into the bed of the truck .

Edit ; You should download the -10 TM and read it before you go look at the truck , the light switches and a few other things are different than a civy truck.

I drive an M1008 with an 8ft Western plow on it 5 days a week. It has been on since Novemebr 21. I do not plan on taking it off until Spring. I also have an M1009 that has a 7.5 ft plow same boat November till spring. the M1009 is driven off road 40 hours a week. The M1008 is on the interstate and highways. No problems with engine overheating. I would say check the fluids and get in it and run it like you stole it. Happy Holidays. Good Luck with your purchase. They push snow like tanks.

Thanks for the replies guys I'm happy to hear I can drive it home with the plow on it. I also have been reading as much as I can about the features these have different then the civilian trucks but I known I haven't even scratched the surface of all the great information that is available here yet.

Yeah, if you accidentally bump that BO light switch you could find yourself beside the road tearing your hair out trying to figure out why none of your lights work, while Officer Friendly does paperwork with your name on it. That ain't no fun!

"Well, if it ain't no fun, why the big grin?"

'Cuz when you tell us about it, we will be laughing at you!

All in good fun, of course.

For us. ;)

Welcome!

Well looks like I'm not getting the m1008 someone else could be there sooner so he sold it. If anyone around southeast Iowa has one for sale let me know.

Mine will run hot unless I keep the plow angled a little and as low as I can without scraping the ground but only on the highway and my plow is a behemouth.

I feel your pain. I was a lurker on this site and tore through all the auction sites and craigslist before finally, after a year and a half of searching I scored my m1009. Had to drive seven hours to get it too.

I'm putting a 7.5' plow on my 09 and was concerned about heat as well. I was thinking deep tranny pan also but think ill run it stock first as we've never had any issues with the 09 yet. We are however re gearing to 4.10
