M1028 cold weather issues

Couldn't find anything similar, so here's my issue. 2 days ago I fired up my 1028 to let it warm up before I left for dinner, and when I went to leave, the truck had stopped running. The gauge showed 1/8 tank of fuel, so I went to crank it up again, but it wouldn't turn over. The next day I added 5 gallons with some diesel 911, and charged each battery individually with a trickle charger. The truck cranks, but just won't turn over. I've never had a truck gel up on me (it was around 25 degrees that night), and it's my first military vehicle, so I don't know if I'm overlooking something simple or if I gelled up.

I would remove the fuel filter and replace it or take it in the warm some where. It sounds like you are gelled up. I had magical results with the 911 fuel additive. I have to start diesels all winter long and that stuff works wonders. As a last resort I would spray very little either. Very little while someone else is cranking it.

This is a good way to blow the head gaskets , really bad advice.

OK I have done it for years. Very little was my point. I never blew a head gasket in 30 years of starting these things. Very little either is just that. Sorry for the bad advise. At least I gave him something else to try also. Last resort when the truck is needed.

Did you bleed the air from the system? How much have you tried cranking it?

TM 9-2320-289-10 page 3-4

ENGINE TURNS OVER BUT WILL NOT START
Step 1. Fuel tank may be empty. Check gage with ignition switch in “ON” position.
If empty, fill tank.

NOTE
DO NOT put fuel in intake manifold or use starting fluids.
Assistant will be required for the following procedures.

Step 2. Open air bleed valve (1) on top of fuel filter on front of firewall
Step 3. Crank engine at 10-15 second intervals after WAIT light goes out, Continue until
fuel flows out of air bleed valve (1).
Step 4. Close air bleed valve (1).
Step 5. Crank engine for 10 seconds. If it does not start, wait 15 seconds and crank engine
again after WAIT light goes out. Refer to paragraph 2-8 for proper starting
procedures.
Step 6. If after three attempts, engine does not start, notify your supervisor.
Step 7. Battery may be weak.

Instead of ever using ether put a little gasoline on a grease rag. Take the breather cover off and lay the rag on the outside of the air filter and put the cover back on. Now try to start after the wait light goes out. The vapor from the gas on the rag is just enough to help start the engine and is a lot safer. Remember to remove the rag after it starts. Over the road rigs use to run 10% gasoline in high sulfur diesel to keep it from gelling. I'm not sure it would be safe in ultra low sulfur diesel because of lubrication problems.

I just had the same issue with my personal wretched invention of the devil (otherwise known as a M1009).

Parked it on a steep slope and it would not start.

Suffered the indignity of having my neighbor drag it home with his big John Deere.

It sat for several weeks and every so often I tried to crank it with no result other than draining the batteries.

Called :recovry4x4: in Fla who told me to just keep cranking on it once I was sure the air was out of the system (I had added 10 gallons of fresh fuel).

I hooked it up to the M927 for some extra CCA and let her rip.

I'd crank on it until I thought the starter was heating up and then walk away for around 30 minutes (Kenny's advice).

The third time I cranked on it she fired off.

This is the main reason this truck in included in my "fund a movie fire sale".

but it wouldn't turn over. ... The truck cranks, but just won't turn over. .

Cranks = turns over. Same thing. The batteries are providing power to the starter motor and it's moving the engine like it's supposed to.

I think you are trying to day it does not start. That's a completely different issue.

Words matter, if you want to be understood. It won't do you any good to have people giving you advice on how to get the engine to turn over if it's already turning over.

Yea I did. May I still ask if he got it started? I am allowed to ask. I don't think that is in a violation of any rules. It has been 2 hours since his last post. I was assuming that he was in need of getting the truck started. Unlike me when I start something I don't quit until it is running. Even if it takes the very little amount of magic spray. I was only asking in hopes that he would reply yea or nay. Not in need of any reading lessons.
( It would be nice when people ask for help that they post an outcome of the situation.) I just copied this last sentence from a post that Warthog made. That is why I even ask about if the member got the truck started.

This would tell me he did not get it to start. Based on facts he posted not assuming anything.

Let's focus on the OPs issues, not everyone else's issues(lack of reading comprehension).
