A vise is not a hydraulic press. It can hold things tightly, but that jaw wasn't designed to be used under extreme pressure.

Cast iron is brittle, gray cast iron more than others. The excess carbon in solution during the casting process precipitates out as flakes of graphite which form inclusions that form stress risers. Malleable iron is gray iron that has been heat treated to turn the graphite flakes into spheres, reducing the stress riser issue.

This isn't fatigue, it is from abuse on my part and a weak design. It can be repaired and stronger than original as nickel electrode is far tougher than gray cast iron.

I read the prologue, and fast-forwarded to pp. 19 and the epilogue. Clearly one of the epics of web forums, and still....to be continued.

Good stuff.
If you follow that link at the bottom of page 19 to shopfloortalk, you will find the resolve of the story.

Thanks for that gimp:

- Went to pp 33 of the second "book"

But still uncertain; was Cutter's Vise ever resurrected? Was new life breathed into the old iron!????

Or is it destined to be The Story Without An Ending??!!!!

There is an ending, I will not ruin it for you. It even caught Wilton's attention. They awarded him some stuff for his efforts.
