Military humvee crashes on n.j. Turnpike in chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD TWP., N.J.
Four soldiers and two civilians were taken to the hospital after a Military Humvee and Nissan crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike late Friday night.

The crash happened just before 11:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes near exit 7A in Chesterfield Township, New Jersey.

Police say the Humvee and a Nissan collided and the impact sent the Humvee barreling into a tree.

The Nissan was changing lanes when it clipped the corner of the Humvee, causing it to overturn.
There were four military personnel in the Humvee and two civilians in the Nissan.
The 35-year-old driver of the Humvee was ejected. He is a member of the military from Fort Drum, New York.

He was flown in critical condition to the hospital.

The driver in the Nissan was a 43-year-old man from Hackensack, New Jersey.
All the victims were taken to Capital Health in Trenton.

Police say the Humvee was the final vehicle in a military convoy.

The accident is under investigation.

Prayers for the injured. Since the HMMWV was the last vehiclein the convoy I wonder if the Nissan either ran into the back of the HMMWV or clipped the rear corner as it tried to pass.

Last in the convoy, It happens sometimes when impatient drivers try to "run" a long convoy and meet oncoming traffic. Hope the crew make a speedy recovery, especially the driver who appears to have been ejected through the windscreen on impact with the tree?.

When one of these get hit/ rollover, 9/10 times the doors open up. The belts on them are a Joke. Just a lap belt.

The M1151s we got had a 2 part lap and shoulder belt. they were independent to aid in quick release and not catching on gear, but required individual use to ensure proper safety.

Check your facts....that hmmwv has a seat belt system designed specifically for rollovers, crews are trained to egress.
they are run through simulators over and over. The seat belt system is designed to keep the crew in the truck, as well as the gunner in the hatch, he has a special rig to keep in in the truck to prevent ejection.
all the Old HMMWV's have a seat belt MWO applied many years ago....

Done my fair share of rollover drills. Still up to the soldier on how to wear the belt. Remember, everything is made by the lowest bidder. I had a belt in a brand new up armored hmmwv we had received come unlatched with a little pressure. Regardless, its a travesty that this happened.
