My M38A1 was 24V but was converted to 12V. It still has the generator on it and I was curious of what I had to do to use it as a welder in the field?

It can be done, however you need a good set of batteries because you connect to the batteries, not the generator. the positive connection of the 24 v is your welding ground and the negative lead connects to the welding rod. Steel clothes hangers make great welding rod. There are a couple of short videos out showing the task.

Thank you for your reply...sounds like a cool way to do some welding out in the field. I watched a you tube video and with the pos. for ground they had a good weld with minimal splatter!
