I'm sure the answer to my question is somewhere in a manual, but I can't seem to find it so I'll ask here.

What is the towing capacity of the M917 dump?

Any info would be appreciated.

Do you have the -10 TM? If not you need to get it.

I am pretty sure the info you seek is in that. Darn sure as a matter of fact.

The TM's are your buddies, you will do well if you
look at them from time to time.

I found the info you seek in less than a minute in the -10 TM;

M917 Curb Weight = 34,030 Ibs (1 5,459 kg)

M917 GVWR = Xx,000 Ibs (XX,019.40 kg)

(Hint, go to PDF page #36 or so and get the balance of the info you seek)

:)

GVWR 75,000lbs but that doesn't answer the tow rating.

If we knew GCVWR we could derive it but I was unable to find that listed anywhere either.

Sorry to be useless...
75,000 on three axles is not street legal.

You have to follow the bridge law. Simple answer is 12,000 on the steer and 34,000 on each pair of axles for a max of 80,000 for 5 axles.

They do not rate class 7 or 8 trucks for GCVWR like they do on pickups

A lot of it depends on the hitch and trailer.

This is actually a pretty interesting question -

The TMs do not give a GCWR for the M917. The TM does state the pintles on all the M915 series trucks are rated at 60,000 lbs capacity.

The various chassis types all have the same GVWR -

M915/M915A1 50,000 lbs
M916/M918 56,000 lbs
M917/M919/M920 75,000 lbs

The TM lists GCWRs for the M915, M916, and M920, but not the M917, M918, or M919. While I wouldn't presume anything, I think it does make sense that the GCWR of the various types of chassis would be the same.

M915 105,000 lbs
M916/M918 106,000 lbs
M917/M919/M920 130,000 lbs

Were that true, a fully loaded M917 - 75,000 lbs (with 40,000 lbs of payload) would have a towing capacity of 55,000 lbs.

All that being said, when you look at the M915, M916, and M920 GCWRs, (and military tractors in general) they seem to be based around the capacities of the trailers they're meant to pull. I suspect that in most cases, the absolute "break stuff" capacities are much, much, much higher. Likely with the M915 series trucks, even the "safe" limit is much higher than the listed GVWR/GCWR. So I suppose your answer depends on what your intended use is (on or off road) and/or how the law in your jurisdiction will interpret as far as dataplates, TM, or registration GVWR, etc...

Just my 1/50th of a dollar.

A M917 has a pusher axle, so it can be a 4 axle truck. The TM lists the front axle loaded as 10,980 lbs, the pusher as 20,000 lbs, and the rear tandem as 44,200 lbs loaded.

The bottom line is the only number for M917 towing capacity that is listed in any of the TMs is 60,000 lbs.

Thanks for the replies. I found that pintle rating of 60k, but as stated, that was the only rating listed. The GCWR is listed as n/a in the TM. I appreciate the helpful replies, and was glad to see I got the smart-ass one I was expecting.

The front axle will weigh in at about 14000lb. empty at least the m916's are. Do not know SC laws for weigh on front axle. Would be interesting to know the M917 works out.
