General Question(s) Regarding Auctions for 5-Ton

Hello All,

New to this site. As of yet, I don't own any vehicles. I did find a site, GovPlanet/IronPlanet that has vehicles rather close to me (90 miles or so). As I started looking, all of the auctions started at or around $2000. I did a search for completed Auctions and they all seemed to go for about that much or slightly more. This almost seems too good to be true. I understand that there may be things wrong with these trucks but it seems the website does do some initial inspections of the vehicles. Is my naiveté showing?

Also, I saw on here people referring to long wait times for EUC or something...what is that acronym referring to?

Thanks,
Danno

A lot of the trucks going that low would be close to scrap. EUC won't come into play on the 5 tons so no need to worry about that it stands for End Use Certificate which is basically the Trade Security Commission making sure you are an american citizen when buying certain types of items/ Humvees for example. My suggestions would be to make sure you dive into the inspection report and under engine make sure it states it started and ran if that's what you are looking for.

Thank you, Jwade. When I go in and look at the individual reports, some are worse than others but some seem to have 3 stars on most everything, the engine starts (after a jump) and there are some with "no noticeable vapor". Again, it seems way to cheap. Thanks for your input.

Price is driven by supply and demand.

A few years ago I was buying deuces for 1000 bucks and driving them home. That was when the government was flooding the system with them to get them out of the inventory.

They are now doing that with the 900 series 5 tons and other trucks.

I saw HETT's sell last year for 8500 dollars that had less than 100 miles on them.....that is for a 240,000 buck truck.

Your tax dollars at work.

Keep an eye out for M1079s or similar trucks. They are probably more in line with what you want for civilian purposes. There're newer than M939s, too.

The location you are thinking of does have cheaper trucks as of late but you must do your own inspection work from the video/pics and take a gamble. So far I've noticed most trucks from that place were turned in for rebuild or rustproofing and have sat a long time. I have 6 sitting in my yard right now. Expect repairs, plan to have it shipped home, and don't go by the inspection details 100% as they can't cover everything. Example: bought an m923A1 from GP. Starts, run, stops, all gauges looked good. Tap the foot brake and it dumps all the air from tank 2. No note of that issue and was undrivable despite being marked "runs and drives".

Advice: Take your time, do your homework, inspect thoroughly, take a gamble, ship it home. At the point have fun.

I'm right up the road from you and bought an M923A1 back in February from Ft Riley.

Hindsight being 20/20, I wish I would have previewed the trucks prior to auction. I was able to drive mine home, but later had to replace the motor due to all sorts of issues.

If if you did decide to preview, take one of us local guys with you, we can help you out and maybe even help out with your recovery from Ft Riley. I can tell you for 100% certain if the GP guys at Riley say it's dead, it's dead. Most of the trucks that run need new batteries.

I watched your engine saga with interest.

What issues were there with the motor that would have been evident with a preview? I understood it that your truck overheated and seized....

this is what you had to say about driving it before it seized:

"..truck performed flawlessly on 2 45 mile trips on Monday to/from Kaufmann Stadium. No issues. Heater was working that AM and the temp of the motor never got above about 165 on that trip.I drove the truck to work on Thursday...18 miles in and 18 back. No issues "

If the underlying problems weren't evident with driving, what would have shown in a preview?

I wonder if your water pump catastrophically failed. That would explain why the temp sending unit didn't show hot, yet obviously the main bearings were severely overheated. Pure speculation on my part.

I'm in complete agreement with you regarding GP's "won't run" description. If they say it won't run, don't buy it for more than parts , and budget a new motor into your bids.

if you're bored, I'm picking up a truck there first thing in the morning.... they said it won't run :)

I'm not saying an inspection would have caught the blown head gasket. I just know that I would have made a better decision seeing trucks face to face than over cyberspace.

Have fun at Ft Riley today. I'm still in Texas, Republic Of.

So probably a dumb question, but can one just drive down and see these vehicles before auction? Do you have to schedule a time? Thankfully, Manhattan KS is a quick 1:45 from here and I actually have a few friends still living there.

Many of the GP sites will not allow preview. Call the site and see if you can make an appointment. None of them allow drop-in inspections.

Man.. That seems kind of stupid. I mean, they should be doing everything they can to sell these things :cookoo:

Not necessarily. Let's examine that idea.

Preview means higher prices. Higher prices are good.

Preview means more staff needed. More staff needed is bad. Adds overhead.

Does the increased prices from the preview offset the increased overhead from the preview? Evidence suggests not. Otherwise they'd do it.

I'm sure not mentioning *what* the wrench turned was intentional, but inquiring minds and all...

Battery holddowns, and battery clamps. I removed the dead beyond hope of resurrection batteries from the M925A1 and moved the good batteries from the M923A2 to the M925A1, and started it. Full details are in the MV road trips forum :)

Be aware, I bought two trucks from fort Riley. Both had no batteries at all. The second truck stated ran with jump. Upon delivery the truck had a water pump seized tight( why it was auctioned). No belts, bad fuel shut off solenoid, and caged brakes because of brake problems. The gov planet listing stated only dead batteries, ran with jump. So most these trucks will need work.
