The pulley is bouncing around and making a heck of a racket. On top of that the belts are jumping off. I suspect I need to replace the pulley but I probably lack the expertise to do so. Can anyone give me a hand soon? I would be in your debt and would definitely compensate you for your time

The keyway may be shot.
That's what I'm afraid of. I'm not too proud to admit I may be in over my head with this particular repair. I'm just getting into these vehicles and what I don't know far surpasses my knowledge. I've studied the TMs but that only gets you so far without some experience

If you are referring to the alternator pulley, it's hard to imagine how you would shear the key......you ought to take a picture and throw it on the site. To replace an alternator pulley, you would need to remove the nut that hold the pulley on. To do this, an impact wrench is ideal.

do you have any tools?

I have an impact wrench and a socket that fits the nut. I had to park it behind my store so I don't have access at the moment to take a pic. The nut seemed extremely tight but you can move the pulley back and forth by hand

With impact, should be able to remove nut, then pulley.....(you might have to rotate idler or loosen bolts on alternator to take tension off belt).

you should be able to pulley off at that pint. Your key might have sheared, and if the pulley's I.d. Is all gummed up (or shaft)...you'll have to replace versus install new key and pulley.

Sounds just like a truck we recovered.
The pulley was never installed right and keyway was shot along with the pulley.
You at very least will need a new key and pulley

I can't get the wrench in there because of the fan so I'm assuming I need to remove the whole alternator in order to remove the pulley. Is it normal to be able to spin the nut and shaft by hand?

You're going to have to get the pulley off to see if the shaft and/or keyway is damaged. Maybe just the pulley is but if the shaft is, might as well start looking for a replacement alternator whether stock or aftermarket. It's not a big problem replacing it either way though. Feel free to call me tomorrow if you have any questions.
