Advise on value and anything else - 1986 HMMWV

Yes, a few newbie questions...

I have a chance to buy the HMMWV pictured and would like any opinions on value or any other information that would be helpful.

It was reportedly owned by the Forest Service (some other gov't agency), sold to a fire department and converted to fight fires. There are several tanks and hose reels. It has a half cab roof with what looks like custom interior (pretty basic but more plush than stock). There was some holes cut but it looks like the tanks and parts could all be removed if wanting to convert it to a different configuration.

It has a 6.2L diesel motor and is an automatic. Appears to start, run and drive well. Fairly clean, saw little use, and has reportedly less than 5k miles.

Any suggestions on basic value? I am not looking to flip but I can't afford to be stuck in it if I decide to resell. I certainly appreciate any help.

Something is amiss with the front susp. Those aren't the right wheels/tires either. And if it was a HMMWV on load from DOD to the forestry service, then FD, it should be returned back to DOD for disposition. Does it have a title?

Welcome to the site.

I would make sure the fire department does have the right to sell the truck. It all depends on the program they acquired it under from the Forestry Service.

Looks like $5K-$10K from a quick look at your pictures.

Also you need to edit your user profile to reflect your State of residence. It is a site requirement.

I was told that it was purchased and they have the paperwork from original sale. It is fully licensed and they have a title issued by the state.

Welcome to the site.

I see this is your first post and just want to remind you that you are required to at least post what state you are in on your profile. The East Coast is a large area and believe it or not, MV prices vary wildly some times from state to state.

Another issue may be if the vehicle is properly titled for your state and that the title can be transferred to an individual rather than another government entity.

As far as the truck goes, it is so heavily modified I don't think an "average price" will do you much good. It's only worth what the buyer is willing to pay for whatever use he/she has in mind for it.

(Edit...when I started this post no one had replied. Now it looks like I'm Captain Obvious!:D

It would be good to use at the GMVR to keep the dust down when we can't find Omar though.

Title status makes all the difference in value. A real street legal unrestricted title obtained by other than fraudulent means will double or triple the value. If it doesn't have that, simply browse the sold hmmwvs on GP and that'll give you a pretty good idea.

it would be a slow resale for you either way. If it has a good title you first have to find someone who knows enough to pay the difference. If it doesn't have an unrestricted title, you can barely get what it would bring at auction.

The mods to it detract from value, unless you find someone who specifically wants it that way.

My opinions, and they may be worth what you paid for them.

Thanks for all the advice, I wish I had gotten more pictures and details. I have been a huge Mustang and early Bronco guy for years.

They called it an H1 when I looked at it. It is 24 volts with batteries under the seat. The speedometer went to 60mph and had a lever on the left to start it. I had black padded vinyl on center section and back of the hard top. The tanks and hose reels appear to be placed on top of the normal back section. From underneath, you see the factory floor pans (not hacked away). The wheels have obviously been changed with aftermarket ones, the fender flares make it look odd but the stock wheels will bolt right on.

The fire company seems to have cared for it well. They said it has a normal unrestricted title issued by the state and fully transferable at the DMV, it is also currently actively registered and insured.

The price is less than 20k.

Avondale FD also had a Unimog, they do like their toys. I saw this at the New Garden air show maybe a year ago. It is clean but if you want stock it will be some work to get it there.
Do you want 2 or 4 door ?
Need someone to come look it over with you I am 20 mins away..
