Washer fluid pump question.

What determines how long the washer pump stays on? On my 86 1009 when washer pump is activated it stays on for 30-40 seconds.If I turn wipers off pump turns off.As soon as I turn wipers on pump turns back on.I have pulled all connections at pump and wiper connections underhood and cleaned.Any ideas.

Yes remove the entire assembly and replace it. The wiper motor warranted for life is about $50. at Autozone. Don't waste you time trying to figure it out. Unless you have lots of time to figure out what makes it tick. Then you can replace it later anyway. I have had them apart and fixed them in the past. Back in them days a new/rebuilt was $100. +. I even see wiper motor armatures for sale on occasion. I have to ask why? It is a lot of time to spend on a $50. item. You need to get the wiper motor for a 1984 Chevrolet K5 Blazer. If you get one for a 1986 K5 Blazer it will fit but not have a washer motor. Easy to remove. open the hood disconnect the wires and remove the 3 mounting screw/bolts and hold the motor in your hand. Pull the wiper up so you can access the 2 - 10mm nuts on the pivot ball/rotational ball socket. . Loosen them. You do not have to remove them just loosen them. The wiper will disconnect itself from that connection. Reverse to install. Use a lot of lube unless you like that constant squeak when the wipers are on. I go as far as removing the entire hood the cowl screen and the wiper transmission and clean and lube everything. make it a 4 hour job. The upper cowling area can always use a good cleaning and a coat of paint or undercoating. Good luck. Sand and paint everything nice and pretty as you reassemble it. You want to do it anyway. Do it right the first time. No cutting corners. Now is the time before winter hits full scale and the wipers squeak and drive you out of your mind.

All variants of CUCV vehicles are built on to be truthful on 1983-1984 blue prints. But 1984 is accurate enough. An 83 GM truck still had the dimmer switch on the floor. Wow I am getting old.

Thanks. Don't feel old. My dad has a 83 gmc c20 that his dad ordered from gm drove it my dad learned to drive In it he got it from his dad and drove it every day until 04 ish I think.
I would love for the dimmer to be on the floor, the column sucks IMHO.

I just replaced my wiper motor/pump with a unit from Advanced Auto. I went from having no washer to now it is on when the wipers are on. Before I pull it again for a return is there any other things to check? Could the switch on the column be bad??

There are two plugs on the wiper motor, one for the motor, one to engage the pump. I *think* the one on the passenger-side of the wiper motor is one for the pump. Try unplugging that one and see if the wiper works, etc.

You have a possible defective motor. But it could also be your switch in the column. I hope its the motor. The switch? Well lets just say I never was successful replacing one of them. And the last I looked they (the switch) were more expensive then a used steering column so I do the steering column. Imagine that I can change an injection pump, engine, transmission etc etc etc. But a wiper switch I refuse to involve myself with. Good Luck in whichever method of repair you choose.

Check for continuity between the ground strap that is on the driver side of the motor and the body. I changed my wiper switch, it is a sucky job. There is a few little pieces deep in the column like the steering lock, ignition switch drive gear and shift detent that are a massive headache to get reinstalled, let's say it took over a dozen tries to get every piece lined up and working. Not something I would do just for the sake of it. I did mine only because I had to change my turn signal switch and figured what the heck, it was much worse than the turn signal switch.

Looks like I may have a bad motor. I am able to pull the top 2 plugs and everything keeps running unless I pull the main plug on the bottom of the unit. Back to the parts store.

Not to muddy the water, but the original mechanical pump just seemed a little mouse trappy to me. So I ordered one of these universal washer bottle kits off Ebay. It was really easy to install and it blasts the heck out of the windshield. Washer bottle.jpg
