What are my options with a 60 amp alternator?

I won an auction recently for a M1038 with the 6.5 and a 60 amp alternator. What are my options with running things that need power with this setup? Can I run a winch, CB, change my telephone, etc?

As long as you have a 24volt winch CB and telephone absolutely. If you want to use 12 volts you're going to need to put a DC to DC converter in. I would recommend also buying a 24volt winch I don't think you can get a converter big enough to power a winch.

Take a look at the those military guys website. They have a really nice overhead console that has many of the things you're looking for in 12 volts with the converter bill then.

Thanks. I am a complete noob when it comes to electricity. What does that mean in when dumbed down for me? Would I be better off getting a 400 amp model? What is involved with doing that upgrade?

The alternator will put out plenty of power for all of the things you listed plus much, much more. The reason you see the higher amp alternators in some HMMWV's is so they can run a massive amount of electronic gear.

Just FYI. None of your normal automotive electronic equipment will work with the 24 volt system that is native to the HMMWV.

OK, so I just need to make sure everything I buy is 24 volt and they should all work with the 60 amp alternator?
