Adjusting Valves - retorque head nuts?

Hello,

New Deuce owner here - Will make a thread when I have time haha. I am adjusting the valves right now, and was wondering if I should do anything else while I am there, like maybe re torqueing the head nuts? The head gasket seems to have some seepage on the outside of the block, no actual leaks outside and no coolant mixing or loss. Engine was rebuilt in 1990 at TEAD. I understand that this is pretty standard for a Multifuel.

Also, the valve cover gaskets seem intake and not leaking before, can I just RTV the seal surface and reuse them? I am not looking to buy them right now because I am sure one day I will have to do the head gaskets haha

The seepage is normal, but if your in that far I would re-check the head bolt torque. The valce covers use a rubber gasket, I just wipe off the surface and put them back on, no need for rtv.

Any special procedure to tighten the nuts that at this point aren't clean or oiled? Who knows the last time the bolts were checked, probably 1990. BTW your Christmas Vacation line is a classic haha

I used the sequence in the LDS troubleshooting TM. Its here on the site somewhere, not sure where though. I downloaded it to my PC a long time ago. I would start in the middle and work my way out, they should be close enough to not matter.

There is a certain torque for Thick Deck blocks and non-thick deck blocks. On the block, somewhere just behind your alternator, it should have TD cast in the block. Thats how you know if you have the thick deck or not. If its not there, you don't.

Question - I see conflicting information. What is the torque specs for the nuts for my engine? I have a LDT4651D rebuilt in 1990 and the head gaskets have the little breather vents sticking out, meaning it is the latest version. The block doesn't seem to say TD near the engine tag. Is the spec 130 or 157? I seem to find that the TD is 157, but the TM also just lists 157 as the torque for all, but the LDT troubleshooting manual lists 130. One lists torque hot and the other torque cold. Many options haha....and do I need to torque the nuts "while the nut is spinning" or can it just be a static torque?

Sorry for the confusion, they don't seem to make it easy for this spec.

I'd just set the torque wrench for 130 and make sure they are right. I wouldn't put too much thought into it. Your just making sure they are still at the right torque, its not a fresh install.

Perfect, I like that method. If they needed to be retorqued, it is about 30 years late haha. I'll report back. I will be doing this next weekend, I have finals today and snow (?!) tomorrow so progress is slow.
