8 bolt hmmwv wheels

I have a 1986 Humvee with the 8 bolt 2 piece rims, as far as I under stand there should be a piece in the middle of the tire beads to sandwich them to the outer rim. My problem is I went off roading & aired down & poped a bead & I determined that there is no insert in the middle of my tires. Please confirm that I am right (or wrong) about there should be an incert in the tire.

The previous owner had a tire shop put on new tires so I bet they didn't know what a bedrock was & just tossed the old tires in the heap with the inserts still inside.

I'm trying to confirm that there should be a bead lock &/ runflat actually in the middle of the tire & if so is it 1 or 2 pieces.
The info I have found sounds like it should be 2 pieces (but on some wheels it was just 1 piece) & right now there appears to be nothing in the middle of the tire.

& just as a second confirmation, the hmmwv coming off govplanet should still have that in the 8 bolt wheels that are on the truck?
Its not that the military would have quit using the incert, right?

Regardless of the specific rims on a HMMWV, the military requires the beadlocks or runflats. The wheels themselves aren't made the same as civilian wheels, where you can actually have the tire stay on the rim for a bit when it's flat.

My son is a mechanic and I gave him my 8-bolt spare, which was trashed with cracks everywhere, and told him to see what was inside. As soon as he let the air out and began rolling it to the tire machine, the tire beads completely separated from the rim . It didn't have the beadlock inside, so I assume someone took it out after the government sold it off.

People say you can run without the runflats as long as you keep the air pressure up. I'm not sure if that applies to the magnesium beadlocks or not.

While the Govt requires run flats...there is NO guarantee they are in there after 30yrs.
while we are still seeing some 8 bolt rims on bias ply 36 RT's....I would throw them all in the garbage immediately.
and get radials....the bias ply just plain suck....and I wouldn't trust a 20-30yr old tire, nor should you.

Get the early, or late 12 bolt or 24 bolt wheels with the one piece runflat/beadlocks, and then your ok.
8 bolt wheels and 36" R/T's should be in a land fill, or something.
I use those 8 bolters and bias tires on trucks in the yard to roll around, and do paint work on, so good tires / wheels don't get messed up.

Well the guy I bought the Humvee from had a tire shop put on new 37x12.5 Goodyear military tires but there are no bead locks in them now, so when I aired down to off road it poped off the bead in no time & with not having a spare yet I was screwed.

You MUST have run flats or bead locks on all HMMWV rims...very dangerous not to have them.
I want to ask why do you need to have the run flats inside the rim? If they are aired up to pressure they are the same as a regular wheel. If so why not? I am asking because we ran the old 8 bolt bias plies on our M1028 until they were bald and then put another set on and ran them. The magnesium centers are still laying around at the scrap pile. I seen people burn them in campfires. Not a good thing. Massive head ache smoke for days. I am just asking to learn. I have them on Mr Crusty a project truck and pulled the run flats out. They are 24 bolt wheels now.DSCF6861.jpgDSCF6857.jpgI am asking to learn.

Because the rim was not designed to run without them. The bead area is a different angle then what's on a standard rim that allows the bead to seat. I have shop tires I put on 12bolt rims, if they go flat, they literally fall off the bead just sitting...not the case of a normal auto rim, you can run flat on them and they still won't unseat...for awhile anyway.
its the bead lip angle...this is known In the hummer H1 world, this is why a lot of guys can the Rf and install a PVC bead lock...at least that was before there were a lot of after market rims out there other then 1 piece steels and 2 piece 12 bolts anyway....
