Ok, so, I'm like a new dad and every funny noise the baby makes worries me. Only this baby was abused for 25 years, so ... I am justified!

First, it smells funny. I couldn't place it, but is it possible that the diesel has gone bad? Old fuel?

Oil looks fine, probably needs to be changed. Transmission fluid looks new.

Smoke, light, but there is smoke coming out of the draft tube. Normal?

Second, isnt there supposed to be a bolt here? Of course I CAREFULLY stick my finger in the hole when its running, and yes, something is spinning in there. Why no bolt? Looks like it hasn't had one since it was painted. That is me sitting behind front axle, looking forward to the front axle.

It would really help if you READ the -10 BEFORE you attempt to operate the truck, this could save you a LOT of money AND the loss of a finger.

This post was OKed by a KGR, the NON-KGR was over ruled.

That's part of being new. You don't know anything yet. I'm learning and listening and smelling, and looking, and wondering.

And asking questions.

I've gone through life with the philosophy that you shouldn't stick your finger in holes that you don't know. It has served me well so far.

Take a look in that hole with a flashlight when the truck is not running and you'll see what almost got you. The empty hole is fine. You move the plug from one hole to the other when you ford deep water. It stays open the rest of the time.

The -10 Is the OPERATORS tm, the spinning thing on the other side of the hole is the FLYWHELL, If you LOOK you WILL see a plug that goes there for fording, by NOT reading the -10 IS how people GET HURT and things get TORE UP, ALSO you NEVER put a appendage in a UNKNOWN hole with ANYTHING moving.

The HGR is starting to overrun by the NON-KGR

Wise words, one can not argue with. However, I have been sticking my fingers in strange holes all my life :D Well, mostly in my teens and 20's.

Now, I just stick my finger in reeeeeeeeeeeeal slowly. Especially on machines. Only risk the tip, the part that can grow back!

I had D7F for 8 years and a John Deere 7800 for 10 years (and running). I keep them running and am not new to machines, just new to these trucks. So, I look, I listen, I pay attention. If something doesn't sound, look, smell or feel right, then I stop and check it out!

Thanks Donkey.

Ok, finger in the hole. Bad idea. We have covered that. No blood, no harm done.

I feel like I am trying to explain to my partents why jumping off the roof of the barn was fine because I didn't get hurt.

Ok, now, the smell. It's unique, but it's not a normal smell. Not oil, clutch smell, not transmission smell, not rubber, not electrical. We all know these smells. This is unique.

I have had bad gas run through my Polaris ranger. It had a distinct smell. This almost smells like it ... but not exactly. Is it possible the fuel is bad?

-Old diesel is totally possible, it does smell disgusting possibly varnish like. If you haven't done a filter change yet it would be a good time anyway.
-Minor blowby out of the tube is ok during warmup, when you see it is the engine completely warmed up? Some trucks smoke and others don't.
-No, no bolt there and please no finger in there either. The bolt next to it goes in there to plug it for water fording.

Thanks. I think I will drain the tank. Kind of sad. Half a tank of diesel. The smell is just too similar to that of bad gas, so, I think it's wise.

Yes, it smokes when warm. I guess I'll just watch the oil level carefully.

Fuel Filter says April '12. Its definitely time for a full service. I wonder if the fuel is from 2012-13 or so too?

Transmission fluid is clear. Can hardly read it. Had to dip it in there 4 times to verify level ... even stuck my finger in there twice to see if I could feel it. :D

Just jokes. Nobody blow a gasket on me please.

Beware of the TM everything guys. Yes good to read but it will get annoying hearing read the TM every time you ask a question. Im guessing you are like a lot of us, non retired with better things to do than reading 10,000 pages of TM.

Sort of what I was thinking. I couldnt find "What's that smell" in the TM.

I am reading the TMs. Skimming it to find out where stuff is, picking up tidbits of knowledge here and there, but SS is a great place to ask about other people's experience. Smells, smoke, sounds. Things TMs don't tell you.
