Air brake maintenance and repair

Anyone know of a basic air brake system maintenance and check guide? Im into a 923 a2 and don't know anything about air brakes at all

If you do not know anything about air brakes especially wedge brakes do not touch or try to maintenance them. Have some one who knows what they are doing do all that. Your life will thank you.

Is there a Tech School nearby you? If so inquire about any class' that pertain to air brakes or semi truck servicing.

It can't be that hard if someone who is new to air brakes but is mechanically inclined and experienced wants to do the work. All you'd need to do is fully understand the interconnected systems, learn the procedures to accomplish what you want and have the proper tools before attempting to service them. MtnSnow listed all the docs and I'm assuming you can find those pdfs at the root of the steelsoldiers forum directory near the top.

Thanks guys yes I'm a a mechanic just never done these before but I love the truck im assuming everything can be done by hand, the drums gotta weigh a ton tho ill check out the links. Has anyone ever done these before tho?

wedge brakes are more forgiving than s cam, nothing hard you do need to understand air system checks, and wear guidelines which are spelled out in the tm. My suggestion is get a guy near by from a heavy truck shop to come school you on the full system that way you never have to ask a question again. Shouldn't be too hard to find an old guy who understands wedge brakes who for a case of beer will come over and walk you through the system. wedge brakes lost popularity over s-cam brakes when they came out with auto adjusters I still feel the spiders are more reliable at the auto adjustment than s- cam auto slack adjusters are.

Everything can be done by hand. The tires are very heavy and to pull the drums includes removing the hubs as well as they are an integral part. They are heavy as well but not impossible to handle. I think the popcorn icons were because most people who ask simple questions are somewhat over their head. I pull all 6 of my drums annually as it is a basic but needed task. I clean and repack the bearings, check the brake lining thickness, look for any trouble in the wedge brake or "spider" assembly, re-assemble and keep trucking. I sometimes long for the M35A2 days but then I drive my M923 to the posted speed limit and it sounds somewhat calm and happy. My old Deuce sounds very stressed to do 55 mph on 11R20 tires. Message me if you have any questions but I talk faster than I type.
