KDS Silver label...1246779....uses temp sensor ...12338772 grey or black top.
Can't use KDS or Nartron temp sensor 12469158-2
DSC_000340.jpgDSC_000341.jpg
Then there's these 3: SSI yellow label 12469158-1 uses Kds or Nartron temp sensor 12469158-2.
Its riveted together...not screws like the others on upper posts.
The Prestolite and Ametek are 12446779 and riveted also......these two use the Nartron
temp sensor 12338772 only.

You must have been bored Greg, LOL good post, this needs to be a sticky, Mods?
FYI, the green label box requires NO TSU or glow plug controller at all, you can actually leave the connector off or plug the water crossover with a pipe plug...but it's best to just leave whatever is there, in there.

I have a green label KDS box that just started to fail (wait light blinks one time quickly and glow plugs do not heat upon turning the "start switch" to run)…. I've checked the glow plugs and installed the grounding harness, and have had no luck with the box (based on my research I'm suspecting its dead).
With that said, I'm looking to replace it with one of the newer smart boxes (S3)… my question - is there any difference between KDS and Nartron?... is there a preferred brand over the other? the KDS box is part number 2700CR... the Nartron is MFR - 32498.... If these boxes are backwards compatible with the TSU's, would TSU (part # 1310055; NSN 2920-01-175-7214) be compatible?.... I apologize if this has been answered, but can't seem to find any opinions on this...

Upon purchasing my M1038A1, I was plagued with absolutely torched glow plugs. Not knowing any differently, I purchase another set, installed and immediately smoked them too after two successful starts. Getting a little smarter, and doing a lot of research, I dug into my issue (GPs staying on all the time and never shutting down). I verified my suspicion by hooking up a 24v light to one of the GP connectors, you guessed it, the light never went out, meaning that once cycling from off to run it was on like donkey kong except that means catastrophic failure of the GPs.
All this to say, I was able to repair the EESS, and now have a fully functioning starting system.

Not sure if this is the right place for this but I would be happy to help others with addressing this same issue.
If anyone out there has this specific box:

I would be open to having it shipped to me, and repaired and returned.

We can work out shipping and payment pretty easily.

PM me with interest.

This post is phenomenal. Thank you for taking the time to research and elaborate.

My yellow label SSI (shown in one of your pictures) in my 1986 M998 burnt up. I am looking to replace it with KDS Smart Start System P/N 6500391, CR-2701. NSN 6110015427901 - I presume that is a upgrade - is that accurate?

I have almost zero issues with S3 EESS boxes, anything before the S3 EESS is borrowed time….while not perfect, and nothing is, I use them 7 days a week in the shop. How good are they? Well….I have stacks of old type boxes and only 1 S3 box that was an OBF with stuck timer.
What my limited exposure to these boxes after 20+ years and doing this job as a profession has taught me is that most of what I’ve seen in failures came to be from the Military and was user induce, the Military was/is fully aware of the issues and problems because they have been outlined in numerous PS magazine articles.

Ok. Great thread. Newb here. Haha

I get that a specific box requires a specific TSU but....does a specific box and TSU have to go to a specific hmmwv platform. I just fried my KDS box (black box fried when reattached negative terminal) in my M1097A2 and looking for a replacement. In my searches, I can find a new box with matching TCS but unsure if it is compatible with my platform.

Hi, I have that same yellow smart box and not knowing how sensitive these things were. I was adding a light at 12 V light to the battery and I accidentally grounded positive on the battery to the frame and now I’m not getting any power to the glow plugs, shorted something out. Do you repair these smart boxes? Or do you have one to sell?

Adding the light is a bright idea. Real question is DO you really want an old computer going wonkie controlling your glow plugs and ability to start and understand the goings on?

I know a guy that does, CAMO

Chichimarz, where are you at in WA? I may have a box or two, I'm down by Eatonville on the way to Mt Rainier....currently overseas but I'll be back in WA for a week in the middle of June. Do you know what box you have right now?
