Convert M817 into a tractor (M818)?

I have the potential to get an M817 that the bed and associated equipment is in poor condition. Given the issues with I was contemplating buying it and converting it into a tractor especially since I can probably get more use out of it hauling equipment around.

Keeping it simple this is the basics of what I figure I need to do. Remove the bed and associated equipment, install a 5th wheel hitch from an M818, and route airlines for the trailer. I know there are going to be other small things also.

I don't see why it cant easily be done. Dimensions of the two models are very similar. The M817 is slightly longer but I don't see where it can affect anything.

I am sure someone has done this with the M809 series but I can't seem to find much. As anyone attempted this? Any tips? I know someone is going to say just go buy an M818 but the price on the M817 is almost to good to pass on. The small investment to convert would still be less than a tractor it looks like.

Compatible 5th wheel hitches generally cost about $200. It should be an extremely easy conversion.

If you update your location to something a bit more specific than "USA", I may be able to direct you to a 5th wheel assembly close by....

I've got an M818. I'm willing to take pics as needed for you.

I've got a buddy in Cleveland with a 5th wheel off an M931A2 and another buddy in Ft Bliss with one off an M52A2. I think either would be compatible, and they may even be the same thing.

@98G If I decide the pull the trigger on buying it I will keep that in mind. Much appreciated.

@Floridianson I would spend more to rehab it back to being a dumper then to convert it. I would get more use out of a tractor to pull farm tractors around and hay out of the fields, etc. Don't get me wrong a dumper would be nice but I would probably be better off buying a dumper in better condition.

It may be one of those projects where I have to wait until I start digging into it to see if it's worthwhile. I guess first I need to decide if I want to buy it
