Going through an 802, and I think this **** set has gasoline in it! None of the alternate military fuels have a similar smell and consistency as gasoline, do they? I am not up on the other variations our forces use.

The day tank is currently draining. Whats the most effective way to purge the fuel system, add known fresh diesel into the day tank, then just let the pumps run until the tank is run dry (and dumped into an external container while doing so)? I want to make sure I get everything out.

IF this was gasoline, what kind of carnage might I expect?

Based on other general cases I've heard about, like someone putting gasoline in a diesel powered car, I don't think there will be any direct damage, but if it sat in there a long time, and if it contained alcohol, for example, there could be some corrosion in the fuel system. It certainly wouldn't have run on gasoline.

Pump clean fuel through it, and then fire it up. I saw this several times, when sets came back from down range. The important thing is to NOT just run a full tank through the gen set if it's 100% gas. Mixing isn't to bad. In the 80's we got a diesel VW rabbit. It was a wonderful car. I drove mega miles, and it really paid off. One really cold winter, (-30 cel.) it would not start or if it did, ran like half the jugs were on leave. I called the garage, the master mechanic there told me to dump 5 liters of gas in it and start it up. I did, it was a PITA to get running, but ran like a champ after that. So if you purge it well, it's not going to be a big deal.

We're good... guess I freaked out prematurely. This set has a bad fuel gauge (as well as oil pressure, and voltage seemingly) so I took the front metal off and pumped the remaining fuel out that wouldn't gravity drain, by return line. I saw part of a fuel float freefloating around, so I at least know that problem without any more worked.

Dumped a gallon of fresh diesel fuel and cycled it 3/4 out. Filled the tank with fresh fuel, and gave it ****. It didn't want to go, but eventually did. Letting it run a little bit now to get a baseline.

I sold my personal 002A yesterday to a guy in VT who is doing an offgrid setup. Wouldn't you know it, today was 50mph wind gusts... and we lose power. Got the 10k running from my last trip, and its powering the house now.

What fun

Sounds like one of Murphy's laws! The minute you get rid of something it becomes needed within ~24 hrs! I have hoarded things for years that I thought...hey one day I might need that, better hang on to it. Then after a while I say...that's just taking up space and I don't need it so I toss it or give it away. Next thing I know usually a short time later...I find a perfect use for that item/part or whatever it was and end up having to buy something, usually more expensive, to replace it.

Oh, I knew that Murphy was right behind me all day yesterday. We unfortunately had errands to run with our youngest, so I wasn't in the cards to make sure one of the other sets was operational (and getting to work in the dark and getting home in the dark doesn't leave me any time during the week). But I felt that heavy breathing freak behind me since I sold the set. The timing worked with the buyer on my set though, that I couldn't pass it up.
