Control Box

I recently purchased a NOS Prestolite Control Box Model WSU-4009 UTA off of Ebay to replace my current control box that is no longer working correctly. The old part number is Prestolite WSU-4007 UT. Does anyone know if these two parts are compatible??? We tried putting in a Neutron control box but it was not cycling the glow plugs.

I apologize, I do not know much about these control boxes. They look exactly the same but I noticed the model numbers were different after I purchased the new one. Any help would be appreciated.

Definitely do some searching and reading on here regarding the EESS boxes. There's a ton of data available on them.

If you can, I would return that Prestolite box. Pretty sure those are considered obsolete and the reason it isn't working is probably because you don't have the correct glow plug controller.

If you've got to replace your EESS, there's 3 possibilities you should use.

- The green label KDS. It's a one piece design and doesn't use the separate glow plug controller or temp sensor in the coolant crossover.
- The yellow label KDS. It's a 2 piece design and uses the yellow band temp sensor in the coolant crossover.
- Smart Start box, either Nartron or KDS. It uses the yellow band temp sensor in the coolant crossover.

Of the three, the Smart Start box is the most up to date.

Also, make sure you're disconnecting your batteries before disconnecting or connecting your EESS or you will most likely kill it.

The only reason I bought the Prestolite control box is because that is what we had in there originally from 1989 when it was built. We put a Nartron yellow label box in there when the old Prestolite box stopped working but the glow plugs won't cycle. I figured my best bet would be to put a new old stock Prestolite back in there and see if it works. Not really concerned with it being obsolete as long as it does what it should and the engine starts. It is a 1989 GM 6.2 L diesel after all. No need for anything too new in it.

Do not put any form of PCB into these trucks....stay away from anything prestolite, Stay away from anything "glow plug controller.
bite the bullet and only install KDS S3 smart start box and temp sending unit.

You have a part number for that unit? I was thinking of doing some upgrade to my '91 as it starts hard when its cold out. Does some weird **** when its under 35 degrees or so. WTS light will cycle as it should but engine wont continuously crank. Starter just disengages after about 1 second of crank time. Usually have to bump it 4-5 times to get it to fire when its really cold out. Above 40 degrees it fires right away. Figure replacing that box as well as the glow plugs would be a good start.

That behavior is common with HMMWV’s when the PCB (old style, KDS or whatever) dies.

New box (the one you linked from HPG) is what you need. DISCONNECT battery ground FIRST (might consider installing one of the switches, it’s an easy enough thing to do) before tinkering with anything electrical on these
trucks.

And somewhere on my desktop computer I have a copy of a page from PS Magazine on cold weather starting and the S3 box if I can find it I’ll post it.

Chiming in on the conversation as I'm looking to replace the glow plug controller or control box or both due to no power to glow plugs. I checked the control box for water intrusion and it is dry, but the glow plug controller looks questionable. I'm not familiar with this SSI brand
