NEW TRANS BUILD

Today I started the process getting all the parts I need to install a 700R4 into the Campulance.

Parts needed:
1. 6.2 TV cable for 700R4 54" (new)
2. TV cable mount
3. Overdrive indicator for the 700R4
4. Flexplate for 6.2 diesel with 700R4 (Ordered from Rockauto use 1988 Diesel Blazer as search vehicle)(part number FRA-143)(cost was$49.78 with fed ex)
5. Correct speedometer gears for trans
6. Stacked trans cooler
7. Trans temp gauge
8. Diesel gov. assembly
9. Dip stick
10. Dip stick tube
11. 700R4 Crossmember
12. 700R4 Crossmember trans mount

I just actively started this process. Im working with a family owned local transmission shop with multiple locations State wide to build my 700R4 to my specs. Ive been reading all of the threads on the swap here on SS. Great source of information. I will post picures of the build process and install as they come along.

Im having them building the 700R4 using a "K" code 700R4 case. The "K" is embossed on the upper side or on the side (Passenger) of the Case. Ive seen them from 4" tall to about 6" or 7" tall. The "K" case was used on all of the K series trucks and K5 Blazers that came with a 700R4 from the factory. The K code cases are thicker and stronger than a none K case. Internally a stock 700R4 is really not suitable for a CUCV especially a M1010. My empty weight is 6,000 lbs plus. A 700R4 can built to be stronger and more reliable than a 4L80E trans. My trans will be stronger than a 4L80E and able to tow in OD. I won't be towing. This trans will cost me around $2,000 to have built and another $1000 to have my old unit removed new trans installed and drive shafts cut/modified to new lengths. I suspect I will have about $3500 invested by the time I drive out of the Trans shop.

You either need to install a new input shaft for the original NP208 that was mated to your TH400 or use a 27 spline NP208. I found one locally and will rebuild it my self. The stock trans and Tcase Im going to keep for anther project down the road.

From my understanding you shouldn't have to change the driveshafts as the 700R4 and the TH400 are roughly a 1/4" different in length...

Well that would be nice!

Just checked and you are right! Thanks for the heads up.

TH400: 24-3/8" Mount: 2-3/4" Total length: 27-1/8"
700R4: 23-3/8" Mount: 3-7/8". Total length: 27-1/4"

Height wise I'm not sure what the difference is but should be real close to what it was with the TH400. I will let you know.

Today I went to the local Junk Yard and found the very elusive TV cable bracket. I found it in the very last vehicle that possibly could have had it! I also found a suburban that was 4 wheel drive 1/2 ton model that use to have a 700R4. Well the Trans, Tcase and steering column were missing but laying on the ground under her was the Trans/Tcase crossmember I needed. She is currently soaking in degreaser. I will take her down to the pressure carwash in the morning. I will then sand her down and paint her up real nice. I am now waiting to hear back from a Craigslist seller about a 27 spline NP208. I am also in need of the OD gear shift indicator to replace my 3 speed one on my steering column. Today was a great parts find day!

NEEDED ITEMS:
NP208 to 700R4 spacer/mount (I cannot find mine and suspect I gave it to a friend years ago)
OD gear selector indicator for steering column.
27 spline NP208

The square body NP241 would also work and give you a 2.72 to 1 4 low ratio. Slightly better than the 208 at 2.62 to 1... Good find at the junkyard!!!

If you have the tall adapter, you can use the factory M1010 crossmamber. If you have the short adapter, you could use the new crossmember pictured. I think I have both adapters. I've got a mean stash of 700R4/241 stuff I've been saving for my ambulance. Ambulance is sold so now contemplating selling all that stuff.

Today I ordered a newly rebuilt NP241. $1300 and some change delivered. I figured I might as well go all new as my M1010 only has 5,300 plus miles on her right now. I also painted the W 700R4 Crossmember. Looking at the W crossmember it looks like I will lose some ground clearance unless I'm not seeing it right. Anyone have a pic of a 700R4 mounted in Cucv with the W crossmember? Ive been looking at a bunch of threads but no luck. I may just end up using the factory TH400 Crossmember. Need a tall adaptor mount. Anyone have one of those and the bolts? Thats almost the last of the bits I need. Went to the junk yard today and struck out on finding one. Now I just need the TC cable itself. Anyone have the correct length I need. Ive read 36.1". Is that correct? Thanks for any help.

Somewhat similar, since my '84 M1028 only has about 58k miles I went with a rebuilt NP208 and now have my OEM NP208 with a crack in the rear case half to repair with a replacement case half and have on standby as a spare.

I have a spare tall adapter for the TH400/NP208......don't know if that helps you for TH400/NP241. PM me if I can help.

The correct TV cable is AC Delco 25515599. 36.1" long.

The correct 700R4-to-NP208 tall adapter is GM 14038663 to fit on the standard CUCV crossmember. Not sure about that "W" crossmember, or if your NP241 is different. The 14038663 is 1-piece all cast, however I have heard that you can also use the 15629188 which is the short adapter with a GM spacer.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. I just ordered the correct TV cable from Summit Racing.
.

Well the cable from Summit Racing was not the correct length. Not sure if the factory stuck the wrong cable in that package or what. The trans shop ordered the same part number above (25515599) and it was 36.1". Worked perfectly.

Everything was finished this morning at the trans shop. They went to put the T-Case in 2H and it wouldn't shift. They tried 4H and no go. Then they tried 4Low and it slide in. The problem was it wouldn't come out of 4 low. So under the Campulance they went and disconnected the linkage. They tried by hand and other means to get it out of 4 low. Trans in Neutral wheels choked and nothing, just jammed. I called the company I ordered it from and they wanted to talk to the Trans shop but said if it doesn't work they will send me a new one. Oh well **** happens. I really wanted to hit some trails this weekend with the wife. Maybe next weekend. Will keep you posted.

On another note the drive lines are perfectly lined up and no need to extend or shorten anything. The W Crossmember worked great with the short Trans/Tcase mount. I do not believe the factory crossmember with the tall Trans/Tcase mount will work. Possible with the short mount as I believe the hight would be about the same as with the W mount. The W mount would be more ridged. Except maybe the TCase skid plate won't work. I will take some pics when I get her home. Overall the T case on the W mount the Tcase hangs down right about the same amount as on the TH400/NP208 does. Its just the difference on the cross member design that makes the difference. Also on a 700R4 the Tcase mounts much lower than the Tcase does on the TH400. Also my W mount is sitting on the top of the lower C channel. I used 4 Grade 8 7/16 bolts (4. 2-1/2" and 4. 2" bolts). 16 Grade 8 washers with nylocks and split washers finished the mounting. So the mount is seriously bolted on. One of the factory crossmember holes in the frame sits right next to the holes that needed to be drilled out. So I decided to just have them install 4 bolts on each side as the one next to the original frame hole would not be as solid as the other holes. Again pictures will show this better than I can describe it.

Well that sucks! But it's the way things go. I'd like to see the picks of it installed as I got the tall mount with the 700r4 I picked up. Keep up the great work!

My new replacement NP241 will be here Friday the 10th. I won't be working on the A/C now for 2 to 3 weeks. I have a few events I need to be at and just won't have the time now for my rig be down. On that note though I have picked up the new vents and dash vent cover to transform her into an A/C equipped rig. I will continue to pick pieces up to that end at least.
