Ambulance transformation in progress. Truck is preped. Need a way to lift and set it on the truck.
Anybody know where to get the rubber seal for the windshield and bulkhead?

Now that´s a familiar sight ! I also dragged my ambulance top home on a trailer.... ;-)

For lifting: There are four bolt points at the top sides where eyelets could be put in, but I seriously doubt that they will carry the 2,000 pounds of the top. The eyelets were intended to hold straps that would keep the airlift spreader from falling down.
I didn´t use those eyelet options.

I lifted my top with four chain hoists. Each with a 2,000 pound capacity, so there was a bit of safety margin, and hooked all four hoists on slings hanging from my garage´s roof beams. I did some quick calculations before, though. The load of the top was about equal to the snow load that the roof needs to carry in winter. At the bottom, I used two long double slings run under the main body. One at the front where the bulkhead gives a lot of strength to the body, and one right at the begin of the overhang.

No idea about the seal. My top came with that seal in "still OK"-condition, but I think I could well use a new one. If you find a source, woulkd be great to hear.

When I dropped my 996 body on 18 years ago we ran chains diagonally from the lifting bolts build into the body (on the sloping panels) with a forklift No problem at all. What we did was to lift the body straight up and then back the truck under it and lower it down.

5 bolts and 2 wires later the job was finished. You will need to pick up some 18" extensions for the taillight wiring because they relocate to the rear body panel. Then I mounted a backup camera on the rear crossmember under the body. It shades it a little bit but you can still clearly see what's behind you and the kids don't play with it in that location. Ran my backup light power from the shifter legend lights. That way I could leave the dash lights off if I didn't want them to come on and it's a convenient place to pick up light power.

I'm still looking for another litter rack access door to mount to the right of the stairs if you know where a damaged body is that one could be salvaged from.

But that´s very interesting to hear that you lifted the body by those lifting bolts. How much weighs an M996 body ? The bolts themselves should be sturdy enough; I think they were like 1/2" or something. But I was worried about their sockets inside the aluminium honeycomb shell.

We need a Humvee Ambulance Owners Group here for sure..... :mrgreen:

Is the seal you're looking for Item #6 in the picture? If so, that's NSN 5330-01-197-8298 / PN 12339594. MacMotors has 3 in stock and they're about $24 each.

And here I go again. Are you talking about Item 2 in this picture? If so, that's NSN 5340-01-260-9942 / PN 12341705. Once more, MacMotors has this for $32. EDIT: Whoops, Mac's actually out of stock. The original latch is just a standard Southco draw latch. I used an aircraft latch I had around because it fits flush.

I did a search for "military wiring extension" and the short harness you need to relocate the taillights comes up.

(For those not familiar with the manuals, the first number is the part reference to match to the picture. The five-letter code is the SMR code. The 13-digit number is the NSN without hyphens (very useful for looking up part that is made by multiple companies). The next five-digit number is the Cage Code, which refers to a specific manufacturer. The next alpha-numeric number is the part number that's associated with that specific manufacturer. There's then a description of the part, finally followed by the quantity of that part used in the assembly.
The UOC list below each part is the "Use On Code", which list what vehicle codes this part applies to. There's a chart at the beginning of the TM to list what each vehicle configuration would be, then you would know which parts throughout the manual apply to your specific vehicle.)

Not to hijack the thread but ditto on the ambulance owners group! I put a 996 top on mine a few weeks ago, it was interesting doing it by myself but got it done......move an inch check everything, move another inch......took all day but went on without issue or injury. (and believe me the neighborhood audience was on hand to watch the crazy redneck doing ...well the stupid stuff i do) As to the 4 mounting holes on the side.....wouldnt trust them with 1500 ish pounds over my head, so i went with the jeep winch and a bunch of racket straps....and wood. and btw... the tractor was there to hold it up long enough for me to get out of the way if it let loose....so i didn't20191018_123143.jpg20191102_170628.jpg20191103_163053.jpg20191103_170528.jpg20191109_143309.jpg20191109_165053.jpg cheat.

When I got my 996 body from Naval Station Brunswick (Maine) it came with the hard doors, intercom system, litter ramp and the correct spreader bar for lifting the body. It attached to those 4 bolts on the sloping sutface on the roof and the sockets go directly into the frame so it's where AMG lifted it so that was good enough for me. Since then I've mounted 2, 8' sections of 1" unistrut to them that allows me to attach display panels and sun shades to the body easily. No one seems to realize that they aren't part of the original kit.

Somewhere I have the original latch and if you still need one drop me a PM and I'll send it to you if I can find it. I went with a flush aircraft latch because surprisingly people can't figure out how to open it and it keeps out the curious.

Since I've mounted the ambulance body I've looked for another litter access door to mount on the other side and even though I've found a couple of bodies being scrapped I have yet to get a second door assembly. Anybody know of one languishing in a scrap yard anywhere?

Another thing I pondered over was how to secure the rear doors. I came up with the Yale lock on a trip over to England and it works perfectly:

This P-89 latch has a tapered brass lock section, their P-82 has a squared off end. In the UK it's referred to as a "nightlatch".
