This weekend I put my Humvee in a local car show. I had no intention of getting a trophy as it was a show-n-shine where clean wins. I have no time in my life or interest in cleaning the truck that well - in fact, I thought about taking it out mudding and bringing it to the show extra dirty.
My son and I had fun this week looking at 50 cal mounts on military units and building our own using fence pipe, PVC, 1x4s, sheet metal and a bunch of things I found in my spare parts bin. We finished it off with a bright orange cap on the tip and some flat black paint. I attached a 50 cal ammo can and filled it with the large nerf darts into the action side of the unit.
We put it on a tall tripod mount where it would swing over the roof of the truck.
I verified the show organizer was okay with it. We also put a goofy cartoon style bright colored nerf g u n in the M16 mount.
As predicted, we didn't win any trophies, but it was fun. Our scrap parts prop was good enough to fool several people. I had a Vietnam Vet come up and ask me what type of permits did we need to be able to keep and use that!
Now, we have to figure out what we are going to do with it. It is over 5' long. May hang it from my son's ceiling.
I'd post pics - but even though it is fake...I think there is a rule against it.
