M1009 Speedometer question

I know this has been covered but I couldn't find the answer to my specific issue. My speedo and odometer aren't working. I unplugged where they conned to the transfer case and used a drill to confirm that the speedo works. Next, I pulled the gear from the transfer case and took it apart. It had old grease in it and was pretty gummed up so I cleaned it, greased it, and put it back together. Next, after inspecting the plastic gear, it's either too big for the square shaft that it drives or it's the wrong size. The yellow gear will fit over the square shaft but it will free spin and the square shaft doesn't spin. Can someone please take a look and let me know if this set up looks correct. If so, I either need a new gear or the shaft is wrong. Thanks for your help.

So I understand. The plastic gear is stripped in the square hole? Have you checked the tail shaft on the transfer case? It has a gear on it also. Check back.

If just the square drive slot of the yellow gear is bad. Putting aluminum foil around the square end of the speedometer cable will work.

However, you probably have a very high drag cable housing and more than likely a hard to turn speedometer. Pulling the cable out the speedometer end of the housing, cleaning the cable and the housing and then re lubricating with something extremely light weight might help. Pulling the speedometer and playing jeweler lubricating all the moving parts really, really helps too.

I didn't see another gear other than the large one inside the transfer case. See attached pictures. Also, I didn't see a second gear in the TM-20P (attached as well). I think I'm missing parts 5 and 6.

I pulled apart the little housing with the metal gears and cleaned it up. There was some light brown grease left inside that was clean so I used it to lube up the gears when I put it back together. I'd rather fix it permanently than use foil. I just want to make sure that's all I need before I order the parts. They aren't very expensive but I'd rather do it once than have to take it apart again.

Pull the cable out thru the top behind the speedometer head and get some speedometer cable lube and grease that thing silly. But yes replace the gear. If you have issues I probably have a few around here. Enjoy the weekend. Be Safe and Take Care.

Can this be done without completely removing the cable housing from the truck? Or is it too hard to snake the inner cable back through with it mounted on the truck?

Yes it can be done. I would not tell you to do it if it can't be done. They make speedometer cable lube. I also use cable lube and light grease. But speedometer cable lube worked best. Good Luck. Report back. Be Safe.

Reach up behind the gauges and feel your way to where the cable meets the speedometer. You can look first, but your left hand will go by feel only. You will be able to feel the release to pop it off. Once off, you can pull the cable below the dash and work standing up.

Thanks. I just wasn’t sure if I had to pull the entire cable off the truck to get the inner cable back in. I order the new gear and lube off Amazon and hopefully I can get this done next week.

You really should just replace the driven gear on that. It looks to me like your drive gear inside the case is good though. Count the teeth on it and a new one should be the same.
If you have the top and bottom loose of the speedometer cable, you can remove it, lube the cable, run oil through the empty cable housing and reinstall it. If you put oil through the cable, though, you will want to put the cable back in from the top so the oil comes out the bottom. If you push the cable back in from the bottom, oil can push out at the top and make a mess. If you fix it good now, you probably won't need to mess with it for years.
There are kits out there you can buy that have multiple gears in them in case you want to correct for tire size changes. It might be worth it if you are.

I bought the yellow gear and hoping just to get it working for now. I’ve got other issues to address before tires. Currently have 15” rims and would like to put a good set of tires for everyday use and occasional off road.

So the cable is out, easy enough. What type of lube did you use? I’ve had some conflicting info from O’Reilly’s. They have a dry graphite lube and then an oil based graphite lube from Dorman.

Link to the thread doesn’t work. I ordered some speedo lube from Dorman on Amazon. I have regular red grease for bearings but I figured that was too thick.
