whats this fuse mod
Howdy,
Go back to the thread, and go to the 2nd post. Click on the quick link (different colored font) and it will take you to the PDF file. Open it to page 29 and it will tell you. Also at the end of the sentence, I have another quick link to the thread about what the fuse mod is and there are pictures from other members showing the mod.

The Varistor is not part of the official "Fuse Mod". The addition of the Varistor is done to protect the A1 Voltage Regulator from damage. The Fuse Mod only protects the Quad Winding in the gen head should the A1 VR fail and short out.

The best option would be to buy Kurt's VR. It is very reasonably priced and has many positives including not needing the varistor and fuse plus it protects the quad windings. Save the old one for a spare in an emergency. I wouldn't have a 803 or 802A generator with the OEM VR now that Kurt has provided an improved VR.

I make and sell a replacement Voltage Regulator (VR) for the MEP-802A and MEP-803A. Same part for both generators.
I have them in stock ready to ship.

The new VR does not require the "Fuse Mod"
It does not require the MOV mod.
It works in generators that have defective Quad Windings.
Virtually all parts are replaceable.
It offers a greater output voltage adjustment range.

First, pull the K2 out. Take it apart. They were often filled with water, and it corroded them up. A bit of sand paper and it can be fixed. Wonk cost a bit of money, and the worst that can happen is it don't work. The relay is to be had in the internet.
is Kurts oem vr worth it?

Yes it's a snap to install.
Remove the 8 wires from the existing VR. Remove the 4 screws attaching it to the back wall. Lift it out.
Secure my VR with 4 new screws that are provided.
Hook the 8 wires back up to the new VR. Attach two wires from my VR. One to the Oil Pressure Gauge, one to an unused terminal on K15.
Remove the old voltage adjustment pot. from the front panel. Attach my new voltage adjustment pot. to the front panel.
Done.
Comes with a step by step installation procedure with pictures. Couldn't be easier.
