M35A2 Low gear issue

Hello everyone

I have a problem with my Deuce's transfer case , the problem is when I start moving the truck in low range , after a short moment automatically shifted to natural with some grinding sound.
If I hold the TC shift lever by hand , the truck start moving at low range with no problem! high range is not the same as low range and stay engaged without holding by hand.

I have searched the whole Internet and can't find any solution for my problem

Thanks

Is your situation described in these threads?

A simple reason could be that the lever is bent (it should NOT hit the floor when it is in low range) or the linkage is not adjusted correctly. That does not allow the low range to fully engage and it pops out.

Check the TC mounts to see that they are not broken/collapsed/loose.

Also, check the detent ball and spring that holds it in gear . That can get gummed up with dirt and not hold the TC in gear properly.

Have you drained the gear oil and checked for metal? If you find teeth or lots of shiny sparkly metal - there is your problem! In order to check gears/rebuild the transfer case it needs to come out.

Hi

I drained the TC and found these:

Are these for bearing ?!
The truck runs great on high range and low range with holding the lever by hand. The only signs of problem was little rumble and vibration in moving above 10 mph

Thanks

Not 100% sure, but those appear to be fragments of bearing shields and cages. I guess that one at least of your input shaft bearings is falling apart.
See the diagram in this post...

Guess it's time to disassemble and repair. Or maybe find another T-case, somewhere near? Anyway, I foresee lots of fun for you... so please share some pictures while you are in there.

@General Kaiser Ok, here is the good news:
- you have evidence of what is wrong with the transfer case
- the shrapnel looks very much like a chewed up bearing
- chances are, there is nothing else wrong with the TC (i.e. gears are ok; specialty parts that are not off-the-shelf are ok)
- removing the TC and fixing it is probably a chore (I have never had one open, so cannot speak from experience) but hopefully you can get the needed parts (standard bearings) in-country.

General Kaiser, I would be curious how the truck made its way to Iran. I assume the US may have supplied some to Iran prior to the revolution. Or, was it acquired in Iraq, maybe? Anyway, I am just curious to know the history of the truck.

Good luck with the repairs!

These trucks imported to Iran before 1979 islamic revolution by Shah of Iran.

Only IFA W50 trucks plunded from Iraq military during Iran vs Iraq war. They're made in East Germany.

My truck is 1973 model. Maybe shipped to Iran in 1974 or 1975.

Only 14880 hours on it !
Thease trucks never used in war !
They used M34s in the war!

Only......!? If that was true, and estimating 30 mph on average, that would be almost half a million miles...! :giggle:
I agree. 14,880 hours is quite a lot. Could there be a decimal missing in there...1,488.0? Or, could that miles? 14,880 miles seems like it could be right.

General Kaiser, please post pics. I'd love to see your truck.

Interesting history. Thank you @BKubu for asking what I was thinking!
General Kaiser, how do you deal with the spare parts issue? It cannot be easy to find parts for your truck?
From nearly 10 years ago, military started to sell these M35A2s in auctions. So finding mechanical parts is not realy hard r now but who knows about future?! Only body parts are rare here, but I bought new pair of front windshields ! And also pair of metal wiper motor.

Only......!? If that was true, and estimating 30 mph on average, that would be almost half a million miles...! :giggle:
These trucks used only in parades and they're more Idling than moving. My truck has 58705 on otometer (pics posted)

The numbers in white (to the far right side) represent tenths. So your odometer is showing 5,870.5 miles. Your hour meter is showing 148.8 hours. That is extremely low, but from what I've read those gauges were changed out randomly on some trucks so those readings may not be accurate. You have a good looking truck there. Thanks for sharing!

I might actually believe the hours and mileage. They seem to match the rest of the gauge cluster, as opposed to the oil pressure gauge, which looks different.

Thanks a lot , I'm planning to install missing parts and rebuild damaged parts.

No signs of changing of otometer, only the oil pressure and battery charge gauge has been changed.

Every single damage to the truck is for when it sits in junkyards after auctions. No signs of be used in military!

Thanks

Hello everyone

I take the transfer-case out of the truck.
The main problem is ball bearings. I don't know the roller bearings need to be replaced or not.

All bearing are Made in USA except one bigger roller bearing wich is Made in Japan.
