What did you do to your M715 today?

This is a question for you electrical wizards. What the heck did I do to my 715?

Got it all greased, lubed, polished and took off this morning for a display for the USO. Hit a bump and the positive lead on the back battery, came off and shorted between the terminal and battery box. Once I got that box up and got the connection broken, that averted more damage.

Switch was off and I went to put the terminal back on got another arc, so something is shorting somewhere. I checked for bare wires and am not seeing anything suspicious. Ideas? Did something go or fuse in the Voltage regulator?

I did look at the wiring diagram that is posted on this site and nothing jumped out at me from it.

Any recommendations team? I haven't started taking anything apart yet, but that is my next option.

I sold mine for $800 with winch, it was picked up today to go to it's new owner. I posted it as you are buying the winch for $800 and I was throwing in a free parts truck.

Sounds like the diodes in the alternator fused. Try disconnecting the alt lead and see if the problem remains. Can't be much else.

Will do NDT. Thanks for the tip. I have owned that truck for 20 years now and it has always run great, so this was a fluke. Something I missed.

Sounds like a deal Frank, although I did go look at one a while back that the guy wanted 1000 for it and it was so beat that I couldn't justify the cost. If it wasn't bent or missing, it was rusted beyond belief.

NDT, disconnected alternator. Reconnected batteries, truck fired right up, so was able to get it back in its slot. Will pull the alternator in a couple days and see if it can be tuned up. thank you for the tip.

What a shop. Is this your start of a ground up restoration?
Just finished getting Cummins engine and Ford ZF 5-speed OD transmission mounted along with a like OEM Spring-Under-Axle swap (1990 Ford F350 Dana 60/Sterling 10.25).... modern 4 wheel disc brakes.

She'll be a highway safe, hydroboosted 4 wheel disc stopping, power steering diesel powered rig that you won't be able to tell anything has been done from 20 feet away.... the only tattle from an original truck will be the 8 lug rims.... (when the engine is off of course).

I have even graphed the NP200 parking brake onto the back of my married NP205.

The twin sticks will be converted to cable shifting but remain... and the emergency brake handle has already been fabricated to the side of my Ford 5 Speed much like OEM.

Next up will be final welding on axles and getting the frame cleaned/painted back to 24052 Marine Green along with beginning of bodywork

Did you have any clearance issues with the spring under setup & the new motor ?
Not yet... its VERY tight with axle, oil pan, steering clearances but the 715, 6BT, SUA axle swap has been done a few times before... it gets busy under the hood but it has been done already numerous times.

Took the alternator in to be rebuilt. The man thought he would have it done in a couple days. It was difficult to find anyone doing that type of work in our area.

If this works out, the shop I took it to has been there for ages, but the owner retired and has found a younger man to take it over. He seemed on top of what needed to be done.

Just spent morning hunting down Titan flaring tool only to discover I got the wrong size (3/16). It turns out there is a lot more research I need to do before buying anything else. But I have brand new NOS cylinders on all four wheels done at last.

Maybe the one wrong size flaring tool could be exchanged for a kit that has all five sizes in a kit. Maybe? Mine is in a blue plastic box that I bought a lifetime ago. Still really handy though. You don't need those tools often - but there isn't anything else that will do that job.

Since you have all the brake lines disconnected anyway, do a search on here for "brake bleeder". There are tools and ways to simplify bleeding the air out of your system when you get to that point.

got the proper sized tool and tubing. now waiting for tubing straightener. I want the new lines to look right.
