Starter Question

I recently fixed the apparent lack of functioning glow plugs, and now my M998 is starting quickly. Went for a drive, stopped somewhere for 30 minutes, went back out and hit start and the starter made a grinding noise. (Sounded like it didn't engage into the engine, but did spin full speed.). Immediately stopped, did it again and this time it started without a problem.

Since the engine was hot, I haven't checked the bolts yet on the starter, but I'm going to do that next. I'm going to make sure it's not just loose and having a problem engaging.

However, due to the glow plugs not working, I'm worried that the starter is going to to die even if it turns out to be loose bolts. So I want to just have a spare on the shelf for the day when it does die. Looking at the parts book, I see "MFY-6701UT" NSN 2920-01-168-7891. However, the starters I see available are listed as MFY-6714U NSN 2920-01-507-7423. Add to this my engine is a 2004 - 6.5L replacing the original 6.2L.

So is this MFY-6714U the right starter?

Also, anyone know of any other reason the starter might not engage (other than being loose)?

Checked all the bolts, all torqued to spec. All wiring in place and tight. So I’m guessing this is the first stage of starter death.

Yup.. $500 rebuilt, $750 - $1000 new from what I've found. (The real thing.. found some obvious fakes cheaper, but not worth it for something like a starter..)

Could be a bad bendix or chipped fly wheel.. Thought I’d seen some starter rebuild kits somewhere but not sure how much of a rebuild they are.. No bueno.

I'm guessing it's the bendix, I know I can buy the part but so far I've not found a rebuild guide for the starter.

I'm guessing (assuming the windings are good, which I do believe they are, since it still works fine), I really only need to replace the bend, should replace the brushes, and maybe a few other parts. I see the parts list in the TM 9-2320-280-24P Part 1, but that is only part of the story.

Anyone have a guide on the rebuild?

(My plan is to replace the starter when it stops working with the new one I ordered. Then rebuild the current one and put it back on the shelf for, hopefully, 10-20 years from now when the new one eventually stops.)
