Replacement Alternators

Third post this week.... I'm on a streak and I promise I'll stop after this one.

Who makes a reputable replacement alternator? Can't find rebuild kits at the moment. I'm on my 2nd alternator attempt this week, both alternators were "CUCV M1008 Replacements".. Neither fit, the first was missing the isolated ground terminal post despite it saying it was isolated ground (I'll keep it as a spare for the drivers side), and now this Rareelectrical CUCV alternator doesn't have the right bolt hole spacing, it doesn't fit the adjustment bracket up top, the housing is too long.. I'm getting frustrated that I can't get quality parts.

My local NAPA is useless, they don't want to order anything that they cant pull up under make/model in their system. I've been down that route multiple times. I tried to get an M10 bolt today, I asked them if I could check out their hardware selection.. Guy said they didn't have one, asked for make/model... Told him make/model doesn't matter. I need an M10 bolt in a pinch..... Walked out empty handed after blank stares.

1976 Cadillac had the Delco 27SI alternator. That is the size case but Cadillac didn’t have isolated ground.

Whatever you do don’t turn in your originals as a core.

I purchased a kit off ebay a few months ago and it worked fine. Forum member Tow4 at one time also sold kits. Sending him a PM might help.

I’ve checked all the usual places, can’t find rebuild kits in stock. I plan to get a few good cores and rebuild them for spares if I can find the rebuild kits.

I think I have a couple rebuild kits in my parts bin. Let me get to the shop tomorrow and I’ll look and see.

You might check in with @cucvrus too. He definitely recommends rebuilding the alternators that you have.

Guess you also mentioned "1983 Chevy" when you were looking for NAPA (useless without a number for their computer) part?

We used Amsco Valley forge for a lot of oddball stuff when i worked at the shop. Must have been alot of old timers there, you'd call with a question and they always managed to find someone that knew the answer off the top of their head!


It's a wholesale only type place, but if shipping to any sort of automotive business they were not too fussy! We'd get stuff overnight, but were pretty close.

You can even purchase these from numerous places on the bay down to $132.38. They are not exact nor are they Delco either. We have been thru this before. They are all knockoff new manufactured.
The adjuster bolt is 5/8-16 thread sae not metric like original. Some will have alignment problems also.
Some come with smaller pulleys than originals. This causes confusion as to which belts to use.
They will work though with simple modifications.

Did you test yours? They are really easy to take apart and test if you haven't done so yet. Mine had a bad diode trio and I was able to find it at a local alternator store in OKC. If you know what part you need, I bet one of us can find one for you.

Keep your stockers and rebuild them. It's really not a hard job. Hardest part is getting the pulley nut off and even that is easy.

Just take your time, take a lot of photos, and go step by step.

You'll be into a full rebuild on both for under $100 and a Saturday morning.
