MD NEW to LMTV, advice on registration/insurance in MD

Just bought a 1997 LMTV off GP, and the state of Maryland is a bit of a headache with respect to registration. Is anyone on the forum in MD, and if you have a vehicle too new (not old enough) to be registered historic, which route did you take?

I believe a FL title will be mailed to be within the month. Does FL have the "Former Military Vehicle" classification like Tx, or is there any way to get FL tags mailed to me? I see a LOT of shady looking cars driving around MD with FL tags, and cant help but think this must be for a reason (loophole).

As far as I can tell, the only choice I have in MD is to get a Class C commercial vehicle safety inspection, pass that, and then title/register as a normal 17,000lb empty weight stake body heavy duty truck (no discounts on registration costs, req's inspection, etc).

I have family in TX and FL.. and I'm in MD... your thoughts and advice are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Also, who are you using for insurance for limited use of your LMTV? So far the only quote I have is from Progressive for 100 mile radius usage, no mileage restrictions, but its liability only insurance. $375/yr.

Just updating this thread for anyone who’s searching for info. Just received my MD title. I went to a tag and title place in Halethorpe. No issues. I had my SF97 and the paper stating the transfer to me from gov planet.

I looked on this site, and see only 37 EO's none of which apply to the sale of former military vehicles. While I don't doubt there is a federal movement to restrict civilian access to former military goods, if there is such an action it is not in the EO's.
I emailed govplanet to see if they could verify, but have not received a reply.
Banning the sale of government owned vehicles would have a huge impact economically with former police cars, firetrucks etc coming into the mix, therefore if there is such legislation, it has to be specifically targeting military equipment.... Something I have not found anywhere yet.

Further feedback on this..... still looking for a response from the OP about the source of his post.

Who? What? Why?

Do you mean that it isn't okay for tax paying American citizens to buy retired military equipment - but it is okay for the government to give armored wheeled and mechanized rolling stock to our sworn enemy? All of this mess is exactly that. A mighty fine mess and the politicians are just as guilty as the war department. The idiots at the top are exactly that as best I can tell.

Running into a brick wall with trying to insure my LMTV. Nobody can compute the weird VIN number. The only place that did not spaz about the VIN was Hagerty's but they denied me because they did not want to underwrite a truck that will be used for my farm, and they will not let me re-apply with a different purpose (general personal use). Weird. Get punished for being honest.
Any tips on how to bypass the bureaucratic stupidity? I just want to be able to use this truck for its intended hauling of big heavy crap.

State Farm will insure it here in North Carolina for sure. What they do is insure it on a commercial policy only because their computer won't do it any other way. No license requirements. They just need proof of you and where you live - like a water bill, a light bill and a copy of your driver license - that all match. Depends on who you talk to as well. Some folks know more about their job than others... Farm Bureau is also willing in our state.

Suggest you not hesitate to call another Agent if the first one you talk to isn't willing.

As far as the VIN, the insurance guy should know to pad it with zeros in front of the number on the title. OR he doesn't know what he is doing and couldn't have helped you anyway.

IMPORTANT EDIT: You do need to be really careful with the suggestion about "padding your VIN with zeros". A member here had a major situation where the tag and enforcement officials and the insurance company had two different VIN's. One was insured, the other wasn't and it was BAD MoJo. Better idea is let the insurance and tag folks do their jobs right!
