I have some friends who are into overland camping invite me and Jak to join them this weekend. I have gotten a lot of solar gear etc for Bertha and my boy asked for a camping trip as a reward for improved grades/behavior, so we loaded up and headed out Feiday afternoon. We went to Red Dirt Recreation Area near Natchitoches, Louisiana.
To get to the site, there was a little (to Bertha) hill that was fun...
Then we set up for the weekend.
Jak got busy helping with firewood.
And that night I got to see how the solar lights worked out...
The next day was Jak exploring around the campsite and making a "fort"
While we figured out "Cowboy Bolo Golf"
Jak helped build the fire for the second night....
And of course there's always "That Guy" at a camp fire...
Today we loaded up, policed the area to ensure nothing was left, watered the fire pit to ensure no embers and came home...
I think the weekend was a resounding success. We got home and Jak asked "Can we unload later? I want to take a bath and nap a while".... so unloading is later.
And of course, an 11 year olds sense of humor is awesome...

All in all it was about a 80 mile round trip with idling etc and I only used about 14 gallons of fuel. (Of course we avoided the interstate and drove ~50 the whole way).
