61 huh, maybe this tranny being out isn't such a bad thing. If it was an easy fix ( clogged oil pick up, leaky air line etc) as I have seen before on other things. It's state property and one stupid little thing breaks, they call it junk and auction it. Have to see what kind of speed upgrade I can get with tranny's I can find for less than stupid $$$. I'm willing to throw some cash at it, I have no delusions it's gonna be cheap, just don't want it more expensive than it has to be. Frankly I prefer a stick and that ol Cummins can really give me some grunt backed up with the right tranny.

Just take a 13 speed and turn the two rear gears around. This makes it an RTOO. Top speed of 82 to 90 depending on what your pump governor is set at.

Stock 13 speed you will only go 66

Now we're talking, I don't need to run at 90 but if it CAN run 90 I'm not burning so much mucho expensive fuel at 70. Besides, sometimes you need the extra oomph to quickly get past those damn swift trucks governed at 64.

So yeah, it's been feeling more like Florida than Massachusetts the last few weeks. Finally took the PTO off to replace the screen and with it out of the way I can reach into the rear half of the tranny....View attachment 875374While I haven't consulted a manual yet a pile of teeth ( not all pictured) and a shattered metal circle that appears from the wear pattern to be part of a clutch pack....it's not good.
it is a ring off of a center gear that is on the mainshaft. If you’re lucky the teeth are off the gear but I would say more than likely you might have teeth missing off the countershafts and those countershafts are all one piece, they are not individual gears on the shaft. There were some center gears for sale on eBay, you would need to know which one you needed.
I’m not saying I would run it like that, but if the teeth are just chipped on the countershafts and not a whole tooth missing, maybe you could get by with a new center gear. If I was running the truck around a farm or real local I might try it…but I would have to think about it!
That’s a lot of work taking it out, tearing it down and putting it back together and back into the truck!
Just my 2$

I did a quick search but didn't see anything. Has anyone done a comprehensive, documented thread on swapping a 13 speed into a 917? I would love to read it if someone has and if not I should create one as I go if I go that route.

You would want to use a freightliner Cascadia hydraulic clutch pedal. Wabco air assist slave.

Those are the 2 things I would use if I did a swap again

You have to use an RTO-14613 and turn the 2 rear gears around to make it an RTOO

Otherwise you are limited to 61mph.

Saw that thread and actually read quite a few pages before I even bid on my truck. Didn't make it to the tranny swap apparently, oops. Thanks for the heads up on what you would do differently.
