Stanadyne DB2 rebuild

Tried to change the main shaft seals on my Injection pump due to it leaking fuel from the pump weep hole.
Bought the seal rebuild kit and replaced seals that looked worn put it back together just installed and tried to start it without the intake manifold connected to be able to see if there are any fuel leaks. now when the truck starts the engine races to the point, I have to turn it off right away tried this 3 times with the same outcome. Is this the engine runaway condition that I've read about even though the engine turns off with the start run switch? I've read that if you put the top cover on wrong you can get a runaway condition but I'm pretty sure that is on correct but before I go and check I was wondering if this is truly a runaway condition or if anyone knows on what might need an adjustment. Thanks...

@Jyg101 , The forum you posted in is for general website help, like how to post a picture, how does one message another member, etc. I am going to assume that you are working on a GM diesel, a CUCV or a HMMWV, but that is an assumption. Let me know what it is you are working on and I can move your question to the specific forum it needs to be in so that you might get your issue solved.

No adjustment, you have something installed incorrectly, if not the top cover then something else in the governor linkage.
Have you watched any youtube vids on the top cover?

Thanks.. did watch a bunch of videos was very critical when installing the top cover installed and reinstalled a bunch of times to get the feel of the cover before doing the final install. I know the advance piston that sticks out of the plug was rusted in place and defiantly was not actuating before I took it apart now that is working so not sure if that would affect idle.
It was very dirty inside top cover and pump not sure how it even was working but it idled fine just was leaking a bunch of diesel through the weep hole.

Not wanting to be a buzz kill... But that IP needs a lot more in the clean department. 🧼 There's some critical / precision below the picture shown. Rebuild it is the word. If that's the pump...what does the tank to the input to the pump look like ??

The cleaning lady needs to get to that bath tub ring. 🛁 CAMO

LMAO The tank probably looks like it’s been sitting in Georgia for who knows how many years…

IP is expensive. New engine is expensiver.

I would purchase a new and unrebuilt IP.
No reason to buy new. a good ADS shop can make it like new or better. @Jyg101, where in NY are you, ya might want to put that in your location too, There are a mess of fuel shops out there. Google Stanadyne fuel pump repair near (location) and see what comes up.

I appreciate your input but after looking at the inflated prices for reputable rebuilt, for a few dollars more I can get a new unit.

Yeah, but....always a but, if/when there is an issue, how is it resolved? Going through the new part return/inspection process, or, your local place? If there is an issue, the local guy takes it in, sometimes the complete vehicle, troubleshoots it and fixes it then and there if it their issue or lets you know, in real time, what the issue is and will give you the option of getting things taken care of right there.

In my prior life, Cummins had a policy of if the part was their re-man, ReCon, and the PART was brought in, their response was no questions asked, replace it with the exact same part. I cannot tell you how many times a ReCon fuel pump, with the exception of Bosch style stuff, injector, ECM, whatever, was brought in, and just replaced. HOWEVER, we had a policy of testing the part, with the exception of electronic injectors, and notifying the customer that the part returned was most likely NOT the issue, if that were true. Apx 90% was that case and something other than that causing the issue. This includes Bosch and that type, after 1 or 2 times returned, we would recommend bringing the vehicle in and having real troubleshooting done. Bosch MW pumps come to mind. In my position, I had the authority to offer to get the vehicle to the shop and IF the part was the cause, again, replace it for free, labor included, but if it was something upstream that was the issue, we would work things out, discounted labor, parts, whatever, even the option to tow it out and let them do the repair.

The ADS vendors we used had about the same deal. If the part they rebuilt was the issue, NC for the repair, towing covered. That included diag if the vehicle was towed in. We would work with each other on labor.

All in all, a relatively quick process.

NEW parts were another thing. The vehicle NEEDED to be brought to the shop, diagnosed and IF the part was failed, not an issue, BUT, again another one of those, if the "failure" wasn't the issue of the part that was new, and this was determined by us and forwarded to the new parts section of Mother Cummins, which takes time, because they kinda just don't give a s@$& about a single, low purchase end user, the WHOLE repair was on the customer.

Yes, as a local distributor, we would work with the end user and get things done as quickly and cost effective as we could, but it still took way too much time and time loss for the customer. Progressive damage was another entirely different, drawn out issue.

All I am saying is that your local guy will take better care of you than the new part distributor and, most likely, help you out if the pieces parts you got from them isn't the issue.

Will, once you replace an IP on a HMMWV and then need to repeat the process for a failed unit, odds are you will never again purchase a re-manufactured unit.

Warranty won’t replace time and busted knuckles.

RWH once confided in me that he takes a day’s labor to do an IP on a HMMWV. My ECV took thrice that, my first time.

Warranty to replace a bad rebuild just to waste another day of my life is somehow not my idea of reimbursement.

We can continue this debate with PM. We have derailed this thread enough.

YMMV and IMHO

My truck came out of GA. The tank was full of water and sludge. The IP was filled with it too. Here's what mine looked like before I gave it a good cleaning.

Thanks for sharing would you be able to tell me what RPM your truck first idles at when you first start it and how long it takes to drop to normal idle RPM.

When started, it just idles. My idle speed doesn't change depending on temperature.
