MEP-531A not working due to electrical issues

I have a unit that makes power but everytime i close the circuit breaker it trips. I switched breakers with another unit that i have and the same thing happened. the HZ meter show 59 hz and volt meter shows 110 so the only thing i have seen is flashing the field but i do not believe that would help this situation. Inside of this unit looks brand new no corrosion, and 64 hours on the meter. Any help would be appreciated

Sounds like there may be a short in the wiring from the breaker to the outlet or possibly a bad FL1.

You might want to remove the wire from the breakers B (Load) terminal and see if it still trips.

You need to start a thread on your Generator. And stay there. When you post questions all over in the generator forum, you do not get the help you need. And bring confusion to others.

I have been messaging back and forth with FarmingSmallKubota, and he has a bunch of machines with multiple problems that he's going through at one time. I think he was just trying to post similar problems in similar threads to avoid duplicates, not confuse anyone... though, I can see how it would be confusing not knowing that.

The rules for the forum state no cross posting. People want to help. but find it hard when the info is spread all over the forum. It is not even a good idea to start a thread when its more then two gen sets. Anyone who tries to help, has to start at the beginning, and read every post, every time they want to suggest something.

The Volt & Hertz meter on the 531A is upstream of the breaker, so they will read if your generator is making power, even with the breaker off. The diode you mentioned acts as a surge suppressor across the shunt trip coil in the breaker.

The breaker shunt trip coil is controlled by the A2 engine controller, which trips the breaker on overload, and also stops the engine on low lube oil pressure. This module is powered by the flywheel alternator, hence the breaker tripping only when the engine runs. The breaker shunt trip is triggered by the A2 module if the output voltage drops too low, as in the case of a severe overload. Since there is no power being made by the generator, the A2 module "thinks" that there is a severe overload and trips the breaker. The trip you are seeing is normal if there is no power coming from the main generator.

There should be no movement of the stator rivets. I would recommend dropping the control box down, and opening the cover of the generator to see if there has been any contact or damage between the rotor and stator. The stator to housing is a tight fit. If there is any movement that could allow rotor/stator contact, that would cause severe damage. Any movement of the stator in the housing needs to be repaired/stopped.

Your main troubleshooting at this time should concentrate on why the generator is not producing power. Either a A1 module, wiring, or generator issue.

The back of the manual has the schematic to help troubleshoot.
I’m also working on a 531 with no power. The breaker is also tripping once it starts.
The frequency and voltage gauges both work and show correct values.

I have 120 at the gauge and 120 on the back of breaker labeled “a+ and a-“ I think that’s the right label. The top and bottom most wires on the back of the breaker. The center two wires I have no idea where they go or what they’re for. Dug through the whole manual and couldn’t see anything coming clear.

I checked continuity between a bunch of different connectors. All were OL so good.
The one that showed resistance was the 24v supply from the slave POS & the L terminal on the back of the load terminal block.

not real sure where to go from here.
