Deuce winch PTO pass-through

I may be missing the obvious again here.
I have a front-facing PTO, but no winch. I'm in the market for one.
I have some hydraulic accessories I'd love to run off a PTO pump, but I won't have the bed clearance to run a rear-facing PTO (transfer case).
I could modify the PTO shaft to carry a chain ring (right at the PTO output or at the winch input), but:
1. I'm wondering if the winch can be run with the clutch disengaged for extended periods without causing problems.
2. Is it possible to pass the PTO drive _through_ the winch? The drive comes in at the back of the winch... Are splines accessible through a front cover on the winch possibly? Fabricating a front seal or adapter housing isn't a problem.

Thanks fellas.

Wouldn't it be much easier to go with an already developed solution? Replace the mechanical winch with a hydraulic one off an M35A3? Run everything you want with the hydraulics, with a simple shutoff valve?

If I was you I would purchase this part (it's called auxiliary drive and it bolts right to the rear of your winch PTO), then find a suitable pump and connect both via a short drive shaft.

Just keep in mind that the transmission-mounted PTO is only good for accessories up to 25Hp. Doesn't matter which end is loaded.

It certainly wasn't intended to run that way. Problem I see is premature wear of the bushing-bearings (C) holding the drum shaft. (see diagram below)

No splines, there. Just a small woodruff key on that Ø1.0" front nose of the worm shaft.

Cattlerepairman, I may well end up going the hydraulic winch route. I have an 8k on another piece of equipment, so I could use it and just always carry a snatch block. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a decent parts truck, so if I find one with a stock winch then I have a bolt-on solution.

NDT, good point. The hydraulics will only be run while stationary, so I don't know if that represents high speed use.

Gringeltaube, thorough as usual. The calculated HP necessary is 17hp (ideal of course), so well within the capacity of the transmission PTO. The rear-facing adapter is an option, although I understand that these are pretty rare to come across and can be pricey... I'll give them a call and see what pricing/availability they have.
That 1" shaft with a single key might be too puny for 17hp.

Thank you all!

Rare: yes, but still available....
Pricey: maybe, but what is not, nowadays?

If you can find a transfer case out of an old M49 or M50 fuel/water truck, they have a rear facing PTO output built into the T-case .

Some people have them and don't even realize it .

...."built into the T-case".... ?? It's the P-136-C PTO and it can be retrofitted to any of the T-136-21 or -27 model transfer cases, on any of the M44 series trucks, provided they are stock.
Obviously not in this case. OP said: ................

Hey Valley Rock, no can do for me. I've actually run across a couple parts trucks with transfer case PTOs, but I don't have the under-bed clearance for one.
Since there's a good chance I could cause premature PTO winch wear with my plan and considering the cost of the aux transmission PTO, I believe I'll go the hydraulic winch route. It'll just make things easier.

I've seen a few pics of folk's transmission PTO to hydraulic pump adapters, but if anyone has an easy hack there I'd appreciate the info. Right now I'm considering using a stock winch drive shaft so I can mount the pump up front. What would be killer is if I could find a way to mount the pump directly to the PTO case or transmission.
