The custom rad support is compliments of Steel Soldiers so we gotta give up some credit for the green straps.

I read a thread here that someone building an MV was doing some testing and only had the bottom bolts and top rad hose supporting the rad. Until the fenders are on the rad moves around on the rubber/ spring mounts. While testing the rad came back and hit the fan. If someone didn't take the time to post that info, I might have done the same thing. Instead, we went driving.

Found some pipe and wired up a temporary Thrush muffler that will fit under the barn roof. The last thing to toss on before the sun set is that sassy flapper. Noisy Piglet.

I have the servo for him, I just need to send it to him since I didn't make the trip to see you this summer. Also did you have a chance to read my last post on the 303M ?

That fella mb is still rockin' but it seems like's he's rollin' at light speed and can't call back until he slows down long enough to eat. He will get back to us.

I read every word on your thread......many I understand. Been crazy with harvest and getting better posts under the green roof polebarn. Somehow, your thread gave me the idea to use a muffler bracket in the pole barn so not sure how that happened.

I had an odd day with Piglet yeserday. After the cuz' set the timing on the weekend, Piglet fired on the first roll like they should. The plan was to run to operating temps, get gauges set up, set valves. At some point someone cut the gauge package out of Piglet so lots of tedious tasks to do.

After 15 or so minutes of running, the bottom rad hose was still cold. Wondering if the guitar player put the thermostat in downside up or if it was bad, I pulled the thermo housing on Piglets old engine. This looks hysterically historical and will not help. It's a flapperstat.

Pulled the thermo in Piglets new motor and it's a 195, installed correct. It was not jammed up, seemed to move easyish and short of boiling it to check movement, we're off to buy a 180° thermostat. It's possibly poopsible that manure sucking Piglet didn't get hot enough to open the hot hole on the thermo. We will trouble shoot with a new thermo.

Wondering out loud if the flushing might have jammed up circulation somehow so share your thoughts folks.

Found time to look at rubber and found these funky pieces stuck in a rim. Looks like a good place to hook snow chains. Certainly not standard gear at the Yuma prooving grounds.

Those look like wheel weights that had the lead fall out.

Well look at that. There is nothing wrong with your eyes. The 9-8024 has a photo of them too. In-service, on the book,.....hooks on the wheel thingy. Nothing on or around page 471 so we have an NDT mystery. I didn't look on the frame side of the wheel to see if they're inside as well.

This is the only photo I have with tire chains. Use your Steve Austin 6 million dollar man eye, peak through that snow and see if it's a chain hook up. It's a little hard to see if they're tied in.

TM 9-819A shows those pieces on the rim, but so far I can't find anything that says what they are for.

Now we need to see one of these tabs. They're beadlocks. Got the story from one young, experienced mechanic....., at least he was young back in the 70's when he'd throw these away because most of them were broken. He's experienced now and we're so fortunate he knew these tabs helped keep the tire from spinning in low air conditions. If the tire spun it would rip the valve out so the anti-slip bead-lock tab was used. .........and now we know, the rest of the story.



Piglet's telling more stories but has not yet shown desire to join the others in the pole barn or on the parade route. Anti-freeze can be drained out of the bottom of the rad.....but after a new 180° thermostat, plenty of time running to operating temps, the bottom of the rad is still cold. We have flow in the rad since we have drained it out of the bottom valve a few times already....but we got no hot water getting to the bottom. The gardens are picked and ready for winter, might find some time to trouble-shoot this so your rad cleaning recipes are most welcome. Somebody said Crown Royal works so trying that right now.

How long should it take for 1 gallon / 4 liters of anti-freeze to flow out the bottom radiator tank on the G749....under ideal conditions? Draft up that pool and toss your answers below.

We're going to find out. Old Piglet, delivered on June 27, 1952 as number 685, currently takes over 4 minutes to drain from the radiator fill spout out the bottom drain. We're still not getting great circulation although the bottom tank is getting fluid. We've drained it several times hoping for a break through but Piglet is plugged up. Thanks to those old collectors who kept collecting, we took a spare rad to these fellas because Piglet is almost worth it.

We had a transmission scare on the recent test. The dipstick was covered with foam while she warmed up. After it got to operating temps it cleared up so we took it for a short run and finally got a 2 to 3 shift in High Range. It was smooth going up with a reasonable downshift so Piglet deserves a radiator.

One odd symptom on start up is a slight 'forward jerk'. Let's chat about that.


A little more info popped up on the beadlocks with a removal notice and that sassy pic in the M37 manual with the locks in place. Historical.

The January 26, 1955 M135 finally gave up some parts after dragging it to the G749 farm around Father's Day, 2013. I tried to remove the radiator the evening before but those pesky 3/4 bolts with the 9/16 nuts needed impact and lube or they were going to break. It gets dark real fast around here when you want a radiator. Fasteners around a radiator seem to go bad so give yourself lots of soak time before removal. The rad came out fairly easy just loosening wired and pulling the mount forward. With 4 main rad support bolts and 2 bottom rad bolts removed, there is enough room to pull the rad mount away from the fan and lift the rad out of the mount.

We don't know much about 113503929 except it was in a fire. Even the gauge package took some heat.

The front was still okay so today it gave up a radiator for Piglet. Not many pics of the install but it's holding fluid and Piglet is running again. Video at 11.

Dropped a little tube you too video on the u toob with a last kick at the start up before we freeze.

It's doing an odd jump when the engine engages so there's that to chat about.

Piglet might identify as a Frog and this video will help those who want to know how to identify their Frog.
