She go in gear

Hello folks,
I've got a 1971 m35a2 that I really love. She has worked flawlessly since I got her over a year ago up until now. She starts just fine but will not go into gear. When I try to put her into gear there is a severe grinding and it will just not go into gear. I'm no mechanic by any means but I noticed that the pto is always on, even with the clutch in. Is that normal? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sounds like your clutch disc isn't fully liberated when you depress the clutch pedal. Try to lengthen the pushrod a few threads to give it a bit more travel.

You mean, the PTO output shaft (& winch driveshaft) is always turning? No, that is not normal and should be avoided.
1) Shift points between Neutral and High or Low or Rev. are relatively close to each other. It takes some patience to get the linkage adjusted correctly. Do not rely on the shift lever lockplate to find Neutral. If the cab mounts are loose, it may have shifted enough to cause misalignment.
2) With the PTO in gear and the clutch depressed the output shaft should remain still. It will start spinning as soon as you release the clutch pedal. Only if the clutch is working correctly, of course.
Normally only 1st and reverse can be selected if the PTO is engaged.
Can - or should....?? Clearly, gearbox- and PTO- functions are completely independent. The transmission can perfectly operate in any of all five forward gears or Reverse or Neutral while the PTO is in any of its 5 positions: R-N-L-N-H

is the army gone to hydrostatic clutches? low on fluid etc?
Unless someone before you converted it to hydraulic PTO, which would involve A-LOT of $, no. Yours is all mechanical. If the truck has been sitting, and not a bunch of freeplay in the clutch pedal, the disc could be stuck to the flywheel.

A while back, I had the clutch disc stuck to the flywheel on an M8 Greyhound. I bled the system, rebuilt the clutch MC, everything. After a bunch of hours screwing around, I had someone crawl up inside, depress the clutch and have the flywheel/pressure plat a whack with a punch and the disc came loose.

yea, I did that on a cat dozer, in fact washed all the steering clutches in diesel. the right side came lose with a loud clang after some back and forth.
if you're working in -20 F weather it could be dragging. My '44 weapons carrier you DO NOT engage the pto and the main xmission at the same time.
My dad got it from Pendleton Or. after ww2 and turned it into a tow truck. 20 miles from town on the snow storm that closed the road he accidentally
engaged the main xmission. Dark, cold as H!, and he had a scout and a bronco to drag out. He made it after he dug thru the snow with a flashlight to find all the pieces of that pto and welded it all back together. It is still running today. I'll get a pic on here some time.
