Thinking of M1101/M1102 for the HMMWV. Tips wanted.

I am thinking of getting one of the M1101 trailers that govplanet sells. The goal would be to modify into an overland camper with kitchen and permanent pop-up tent.

I would appreciate any advice on particular pitfalls to avoid in terms of buying one out of the auction. I am aware the tires will be trash and plan to replace them, but are there other difficult/expensive to repair items? Any traps for the unwary?

It seems like December is a good time to do this given current SF-97 times and I'd like to have it plated for next spring/summer.

I've had dozens of them. I've had an issue exactly once with brakes dragging. Opening the bleeders resolved it.

I've got one for sale in the classifieds currently.

Thanks. Had seen yours and they are nice but they are at my "local" GP which makes it easy to run down and grab one. (Local = only a six hour drive)

I figure I will take a pair of tires off my second truck to get the trailer home, then jack up the trailer until spring when I can get new tires on board.

I've never had an issue with the tires on them. Even the genset carriers loaded to 4200lbs.

I've dragged a couple of them from Yermo to KS on tires dated 2003 without issue.

Here's what I do when grabbing one - air up immediately with portable air or within the first 10 miles or so. I inflate to 50 psi. I then drive 20 miles or so at hwy speed and stop and feel the hubs.

Coming out of Colorado Springs, my next stop after that is fuel and a detailed walk around in Limon.

CSP is a 500 mile recovery each way for me from KS. A day there and a day back, with enough margin to deal with any issues that arise.

Taking the extras off your 2nd truck provides you with just that more safety margin - always a good idea.

What's your tow vehicle and hitch? What do you have for lights?

I'm going to trailer it off the lot on a car trailer that I use to move the HMMWV, so not worried about out-of-the-gate stuff. I can troubleshoot that at home. Just worried about buying a lemon or a dog.

PS CSp is 6 hrs from me the other way, so you are way the heck into KS by my standards.
