Damn, it’s been a while, 2012 I think….since then I’ve traveled to SA in a built 100 Series, traded it in Otavalo Ecuador for a 78 Unimog Doka overlander and went to Northern Patagonia and back. Then we went from Cartagena to Vera Cruz across to Mazatlan to La Paz in over 18 months.

Now we’re going from Sherman Texas to Dead Horse, AK in our new 98 LMTV and need some advice on battery tenders. I just dropped $900 on 4 new 6T batteries and need to maintain them. I’ve been lurking and reading the NOCO G7200 among others, charging thru the NATO port VS each individual battery, etc…

Who or where do I find CLIFFNOTES on the best set up?

btw, here’s Mildred…she’s been reset by RED RIVER ARSENAL in 2011 and is basically new with 800 miles.

The consensus here is to use two group 31 batteries and put a 12 volt maintainer on each one, either a NOCO or Batteryminder.

Some suggestions for using the Steelsoldiers website. First of all, I recommend you post all FMTV related questions in the FMTV forum, so the FMTV contributors will see your questions and respond. Also, it may take a few days for people to see your post, so if you need rapid answers, it can be helpful to do searches within the FMTV forum using keywords like "maintainer" or "driveshaft" or "balance". Every imaginable problem and topic for these trucks has been covered multiple times. Lots of how-to's on Youtube as well.

Your expensive batteries will last the longest with a noco 4 battery charger. Built in 4 charging ports linked below. This will balance all of your batteries to the proper 12.8ish volts. You CAN plug into the nato slave port but your batteries will become imbalanced because of the 12/24v system on the FMTVs. Charging on the 24v slave plug WILL further imbalance your batteries and eventually lead to 12v battery bank failure.
