Colorado Bill SB19-054 RE: (Former) Military Vehicle Motor Vehicle Regulation

We have the same thing going on in North Dakota...All my military vehicles have pioneer plates which are regular DOT vehicle tags. This year i purchased a M1097R1 Hmmwv and was told I could not register it as a regular truck. According to ND, as of last year October, all Military vehicles are rated as Off Highway vehicles with an ATV small plate. There reasoning is that most of the military vehicles cannot exceed 55 Miles per hour and they can not be driven on any state Highway..I E Hwy 94 or 29 in North Dakota. I am allowed to drive with (motor vehicle insurance as a regular vehicle according to DOT standards) in city or rural or non highway (eg.Hwy 83 , Bismarck to Minot) which is allowed. My Military vehicles exceed 55 MPH but I believe that the far right in my opinion is trying to discourage patriotic citizens from owning and preserving military historical items. For the other voting members in the Nd state legislature I believe it is plain ignorance of the fact that when putting a Military truck next to a golf cart size vehicle and rating them the same..is either intentional discouragement or just plain ignorance.

The fact that the military uses them on interstate highways all the time and always have makes that argument about being off road completely null and void.
I don’t disagree, but if it’s an issue in your state, you’ve got to argue it with your DMV.

So far in Wyoming, my trucks can be registered/titled just like any other truck on the road. I chose to go with Pioneer tags because the only things I do with them is show them off in parades and outdoor displays. I hope and pray all these newcomers to the state mind their own business and leave the rest of us alone. I don’t care where a person comes from, just what they’re going to do to our great state. If they like the way their previous states ran, they just need to go back.
Just my 2 cents.

These title laws are very unlikely to revert . My personal solution was to get my LMTV registered and titled as an RV from the beginning. I believe that secures it in most any state if I chose to relocate.

Let's leave the politics out of it and stick to facts please.
You can keep deleting my posts in the name of your authority but it doesn't change "the facts". It IS up for debate bc politics is front and center on this issue, at least in CO. Burying your head in the sand doesn't help MV owners. Your "rules" need to change where genuine content is being posted. If you don't like the word "politics" then maybe find another way to describe the problem.

I have deleted your posts because they simply were partisan. Not due to "authority". I honestly am not the type that takes any pleasure in these matters. I mainly try to focus on the technical upkeep of the site. If anything I'm a bit soft since I rarely issue warnings or points. Edit: which I did not issue in this case. Yet.

Is there any progress, or anything new on this issue in 2025?
My DMV in Mesa County says there's no new "abandonments" or "registration wipe outs" on the horizon for MV's. The current policy is restricting MVs based on make. So AM General, Willys, Oshkosh are retroactively relegated to OHV only. You must trailer those vehicles to parades too, even if registered as "historic". Nice huh? Meanwhile, local FD's use these trucks in wildfire mitigation but obviously are registered as "Emergency". My local rural FD asked me if mine could sport a pto water pump since they were considering buying one.

I've personally been approached numerous times (4) around town by people asking about how to get their registrations back, since they see me driving around. All have Willy's jeeps and are now selling them. And yet, I know 2 MV owners around town, one with a M931 and the other a M936, who have active on highway registrations. They were already registered as "Truck" on the title so were not wiped out. I'll go that route if there's ever a wipe out of S&S trucks.

Since this is an open forum, I'm sure the Denver Area Colfax avenue comrades on here will report this info to the Denver Communist Party office (Governor Polis) and try to have the policy updated. But Mesa county is Actively blocking the state on several fronts as well as suing the state itself, so good luck ratting me out comrades🤣. They have much bigger problems with ICE now anyway. And those ARE facts.

Check out "Dirtlegal.com"
I got permanent plates until the year 9999 for my M35A2. Pricey for a one time purchase, but cheaper than CO plates in the long run.

The highway patrol that pulled me over near Kit Carson, CO said it didn't matter what state your military truck is registered in, he said it is illegal to drive them in the state of Colorado. I had current Texas registration and commercial insurance.

How did that end?

Wow, I think he'd have a hard time in court over trying to impound a legally licensed and insured vehicle from another state. Probably the same kind of cop who tries to give a ticket for having no front plate to someone who doesn't need one in their state.

I saw a Texas plated Humvee in Evergreen CO last summer, made me wish I had mine there to cruise around!

Did you get a ticket?

I got the same schpeel from the DMV director in '21. Screaming at me about how "Polis outlawed these vehicles!". It was BS. There's a flock of little sheep running around as govt employees that just spout nonsense to citizens to push their political beliefs. This particular DMV director was fired once the new clerk was elected. 🤣. "You're Fired!"

The state police in CO is fractured a bit on politically sensitive issues. I know 5 SP and a few local swat guys from the BJJ gym, from the western slope stations, who say they don't enforce lots of front range "edicts". "Denver is a little strange" one told me. They see my LMTV at the gym weekly and love it. I know for a fact based on research that one of the senior state police commanders in CO is on the board of a left wing NGO, see previous posts on here. That's where this started. Denver state govt is a cesspool.

I only drive in Mesa County and Utah mostly bc that's where I'm at. EVERY single sheriffs car and State trooper waves to me as I go by. Lots of smiles. If they wanted to impound me, I'm not hard to find. lol

I'd say push back bc that's the only way we win.

I didn't get a ticket, I was pulled over for impeding traffic on a two lane portion without a good shoulder. I was in my military uniform, carrying my PCS orders, Texas registration, and my commercial insurance. He was upset at me that he couldn't verify the vehicle based on the fact Texas doesn't require plates if you elect to use the bumper numbers on a FMV. I simply stated I will never be visiting Colorado again. He let me off with a warning if he saw me driving it again, it would be impounded.
