I think it would be cool to have one of these someday, and I was wondering what it takes to even be legal to drive it on the state roads.

Just wondering :)

I can only speak for California, which probably won't help you too much, but here goes anyway!

CA requires at least a class B commercial driver's license for the 2.5-ton 6x6 trucks. State law calls them "class B trucks" because they have more than two axles and are over some weight limit (I always forget whether it's 6000 or 9000 pounds). A bobbed deuce with two axles might be OK with a regular class C license, though it may be arguable whether an air brake certification would still be needed.

I get the impression from discussions here that CA's requirements are unusual, and that most other states wouldn't require a CDL for the deuce. The deuce falls under the weight limit for federal class B license requirements, but some states (like CA) are more strict.

"bobbed" a few times while lurking here. What does it mean?
It's means removing one of the rear axles. Assuming the search is now working on the new site....Search! It will answer many of your questions. Out side of CA, no CDL required unless you are using it for commercial business.

Looking for Bobbed Dueces, try to find pics of devilman96, 100dollarman. They both did posts that showed the step by step of doing it.

Try to get it registered as a Historic Vehicle, check your local DMV laws.
The DMV up here was going to charge me for a commercial vehicle $178. I did my reserch and found that a vehicle that is 30years or older qulafies as Historic. one time fee $10 never expires.
I told them I was using it for parades and exhibitions. moose hunting is my exhibition, and the parade is when I drive it there
