"No preview times available": What to look for?

Sorry for the newby questions, I'm just joining the olive drab frat.

I am considering bidding on a truck being auctioned at a location that has no preview times available. The vehicle description on the GL website says the VIN is: 4M-4048.

What can y'all tell me about the truck from this scrap of info?

If it's an M35A2, it's supposed to have a turbo, right? The reason I ask is that when I click on the "more info" tab in the Item Manifest box, the nomenclature reads: LD465-1. Can someone please "'splain" this to me? The photo indicates that their may be a turbo hanging under the plenum on the passenger side of the motor. Wadda ya think?

Should I call the base and ask to speak with someone who can tell me about the truck? Will they talk to me?

Advise and opinions welcome.

No,Not all M35A2s have turbos but the one above does.

M35 Gas powered
M35A1 LD427 Multifuel(N/A and Turbo)
M35A2 LD465 Multifuel(N/A,C and D turbo)
M35A3 Cat powered with automatic tranny,CTIS,Fugly front end,computer controled

Is that really a VIN? how is it coded?

The photo shows a turbo engine. The number they give as the vin is actually the reg number.

I was just looking more closely at the pic and it looks like some parts may be missing. I don't see the air cleaner tube connected to anything. The turbo may be missing but the air cleaner tube pointing down like it does indicates it is a supposed to have a turbo.

GL pics can make it look like nothing's been smashed with a forklift when it has, maybe they can make it look like parts are missing when they're not. But it sure looks like the air filter housing outlet tube is a dead end...

Chuck, you have a good eye for details! Jake0147's photo clearly shows the pipe routing (and an exhaust leak it appears) bending down then back to connect to the turbine inlet. The one I posted is either cut off, disconnected or just photographed in such a way as to look like it terminates in the air.

Given only the "reg" number, is there any more info available? Like year built, who built the beast and any other data specific to the truck? and what is the "reg" number? Is that the army's own ID number given to the unit? If there are records available, maybe it can be determined when this rig was put into service.

You will have a hard time getting a truck from GL living in Costa Rica. You will need to go thought a dealer that has an export license.

Nope. it's a continuation of valve cover gasket leak and the slobber tube adapter to the valve cover gasket leak. I'm gonna fix those one day. But it's a good case in point about looking at internet pictures. Having looked at the truck, I know I'm right. Looking at the picture, had I not seen the truck, I'd be convinced that you were right.

You say the engine is supposed to be a LD 465-1 thats a non turbo engine or it would read LDT 465-1 I believe. I have two non turbo trucks and they are both LD 465s.

Yeah, as I said, the GL "more info" data conflicts with the pics. The data indicates a N/A motor, but as the other gents have noticed, the motor appears to have (or had) a turbo.

Is this normal? One possible explanation I can think of is that the data presented on the GL site is representative of how the truck was originally built, while the pics reflect a turboed motor from a re-manufacture.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Sounds like the typical GL auction. Could be an M35, could be a VW, who knows? They don't.

I'd be wary of it, because it may not even be what you end up winning if you bid on it.

That's scary! BTW, who prepares the lot photos and description? Is it the DRMS or GL?

As far as I understand, GL goes on what they are told.

I don't buy it totally though, as I've seen trucks nowhere near what they are depicted as in the auction pics and description. If I can't look at it very carefully, I won't bother.
