This is my first diesel. I need to do an oil change and notice the stick said use sf/cc or sf/cd oil only. I looked at some oils at the store and none of them had those letters. Is this an obsolete oil? Just wondering what everyone else is running. Does it only have to be deisel oil or is there more importance to those letters? Thanks

Well you will get a debate about the "best" brand but you want a 15w-40 Diesel oil. Myself I buy gallons of Mobil Delvac at Walmart and call it good. Others like Shell Rotella, etc...its Coke vs. Pepsi.
CUCV 6.2 holds about 7 to 8 quarts with a filter...

The way the oil ratings work is that the OEM manufacturers change the specs the American Petroleum Institute revises the oil spec and increments the last letter. So in 1980's when these trucks were made sf/cd was the current spec. (The SF being a spec for gas engines, the CD for diesels) Today the diesel spec is up to CJ and gas spec to SM. So since the truck was built the diesel spec has gone from CD, CE, CF.... up to CJ today. Hope that makes sense.

I use 15-40 whatever.. oil is oil in a old diesel like that.. now if you were running a turbo I would stick to a over the road truck oil to handle the turbo temp. But if oil is on the shelf at a auto parts store its good enough to run. remember there are not too many people making oil, but lots making the quart bottles.

Actually with the stock filter a cucv only holds 7qts.

The extended length filter ups the capacity to 8qts, but you cant run the extended filter with the stock exhaust system in place.
I was going to use the extended filter on mine, (which would have fit with the stock exhaust) but its a higher micron rating... ie. doesnt filter as good!!

Unlike my compatriarchs, I run SAE 30 Rotella T or Chevron Delo. It was 89° today. BTW, just changed the oiul in my 91 burb with a 6.2 and had to put 8 qts to get it to the full mark.

And if I lived in Florida, I'd use SAE 30w diesel oil too. My 6.5 P/U says 7 quarts, but has always taken 8 when doing an oil change. 200k miles and no problems, (well except for the 4 injection pumps...).

Thats funny Don. My 6.5 truck has about the same mileage and no problems other than injection issues. It now is sitting in the back yard never to be driven again. I'm pulling the 6.5 and putting it in a can to be later coverted to mechanical. The rest of the truck will have to leave.

Kenny-
I've got a bunch of vehicles that I could drive and always seem to end up driving the '94 6.5 PU. It's the quickest 6.5 I've ever driven - probably due to the engine mods. Mostly Heath Diesel stuff. 6.5 marine injectors, Turbomaster manual boost controller (14 psi), computer chip, big bore exhaust, ported intake manifold, egr delete, remote mount PMD, cooling system mods, lower temp thermostat.

I wonder what an M1009 would be like with that kind of swap? Hmmmm....

My 94 6.5 was (prefaced was) pretty stout. That's why I'm keeping the motor. It was stock except the offset setting. I towed many a deuce with it. The frame has some rust issues so it's getting retired. The engine may end up in my 91 Burb.
