Tranny Case

Hey,
I recently purchased a m1009 and soon discovered I had a short drive shaft. This was discovered after I broke a T-case going up a rock ledge. Anyway after fixing that I discovered the tail of the tranny is cracked and leaks. I j-b welded it, but still have a leak. When I check the fluid in the tranny it is pretty faint on the dip stick, but there is a defined line up to the full mark. I know I am loosing fluid, but I cant see it going down on the dip-stick. How much fluid do I have to loose before I will go down? I have found a new k-case for the t400 and plan on swapping all the innerds into the new case soon. How much do these cases go for? The guy wants $200 for the case.

Thanks,
Miles

I believe so, but you might want to find a local tranny shop to ask because I'm not a transmission expert (but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express).. LOL

The main housing on the Th400 is the same. There are different adapters that bolt onto the rear of the housing to make it a long shaft / short shaft 2wd and also different adapters to make it a 4wd. Note that the main shaft coming out of the housing is different lengths depending on the application, but if you're reusing your guts, you shouldn't have to worry. I picked up a th400 housing from a guy here locally for $20.00. The current th400 that I have has a crack in the bell housing, it still works, but when it needs a rebuild, I'm going to use the guts and a rebuild kit to build the other housing.

If I got one could I swap my tranny into that case? As my case is cracked on the tail right before the adapter.
I've got a trans from one of my old M-1009s that I can strip-out and sell you for $45.00 plus shipping which shouldn't be much as the empty case doesn't weigh a lot.If interested let me know and I'll go out back and double check it for you.:-D

TH4oo cases are getting rare and that is a good price for it. 2 wd cases are different in they are set up for a tin converter dust cover, so you loose the added structural support of the original. However, you can drill and tap the mounting holes on some of them if the flange matches up with the old cover. As for the output shafts, they are not inerchangeable with any 2wd units. There are 7 output shaft variations for the TH400 depending on application.
You can weld cracks in aluminum cases, but the cast iron adaptors are not really repairable without special welding skills and stainless wire or rod.

Don't try to use a 2wd case... the bellhousing is different between 2wd (non K-case) and 4x4 models (K-case). The thick aluminum dust cover with braces running to the motor mounts will not work on a 2wd TH400.

Around here $100-150 will buy a complete TH400 K-case core. $85 if you go to the local pull-a-part and are lucky to catch one in a truck to pull yourself (they go quick at that price).
