Power Steering Fluid

A M1009 uses dextron II fluid for the power steering/brake booster right? Is this just regular power steering fluid?

no it is trans fluid. Dex 2 is long gone so use the dex 3. you can flush out and use just PS fluid if you wish but wont last as long.

You can get Dexron II, and yes, it is power steering fluid, but since Dexron III (ATF) supersedes Dexron II applications, either will work. Same fluid is called for in the transfer case.

I use Dex II in all the M-1008/1009's I've built and have had no problems.

damn umm silly question what would happen if say sosme noticed his P/S pump was low and instead of using atf topped up with P/S fluid ?

It's fine. It calls for Dexron II, anything higher (the only option being Dexron III) can be added, and obviously Dexron II can be added, much like DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluids can be mixed, or GL-5 can be used in gearsets calling for GL-4, barring sulfer issues with the GL-5 and synchronizers (depends on blend of GL-5, but that's well outside the realm of this discussion).

If you are going to go through the trouble to pump out the old PS fluid I would go the extra mile and add Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF. It just makes sense.

I'd say that it'd be a bigger issue to track down the leak, so that you don't have to keep dumping fluid into it. PS pump rebuild kits are cheap, so are lines.

All the Dextrons are backwards compatible.
